The problem for Tuohy is that the ones who ran high mileage are not the record holders.
There is no evidence she was "high mileage" as a youngster but I see posters argue this from time to time. What is high mileage? According to Henes they had issues upping her milage to 70 last spring
Correct. They were well behind Tuohy in training and performance at age 14-18. They slowly ramped up and flourished. Tuohy has nowhere to go.
You are assuming improvement only comes from dramatic increases in training load. In some cases, this is true, but it is also true that consistent maintenance of a high training load for long periods of time (year over year of high volume and quality) can also produce improvements. If Touhy has been training at a high level for a couple years now and can handle it well, then I cannot say that is a weakness.
I think the running world is still on the frontier of understanding how to train girls through puberty. We clearly have a lot of examples of coaches and athletes who messed it up. There is also a lot of volatility and variation in how puberty manifests among women, perhaps even more than in men. I think that's why a lot of coaches resign to only doing the "bare minimum" when training girls through puberty. But I think Tuohy is an example of quality training done well through the puberty years.
And, ultimately, who's to say Tuohy can't make another step up in her training at this point? Only someone who is intimately familiar with her program and how she has been responding to it can know something like that. I agree that it is easier to see the upside to an athlete like Valby who (apparently) only runs a few days a week, but that could definitely be more of a handicap to her future career than an asset. What if she is just not physically capable of running 6-7 days a week at a high level? Maybe she is reaching a ceiling as well.
Ultimately it's just so hard to know for sure what the future holds for someone like Tuohy. I can understand both sides of the argument, but would like to remain positive that she will continue to improve. I certainly think its possible for her to do so.

I’m not here debating who will do what in the future.
However, we know from one of Tuohy’s interviews, as a sophomore in high school, she said a good day was to get up and run a 10 miler in the morning before breakfast, take a hike after breakfast, and hit the gym in the afternoon.
In what appears to be her senior year in high school, there is a video out there where she is being interviewed by the Toad dude. She said she got up at 4:30am to go to the gym.

I vaguely recall that interview, perhaps you could provide link. I do not recall interpreting that as she did 10 miles every day, but rather more of a what would be a great (fun) day.

So we do the Taylor Swift extrapolation and assume she runs 90 miles a week and gets up at 430 every morning? Off of one quote.

Does one interview as a kid about a 'good day' with a long run mean she ran high mileage through highschool? No. Her coach kept her overall mileage under control. She wasn't running high mileage.

Based on times, Valby is still progressing on her program; her ceiling is unknown, and there is no reason to question whether she should change her program.

If you know the numbers, go ahead and site them. Ask FastTuohy for the numbers; he probably has them at his fingertips.

sorry, I can't cite (or site) the numbers but I think she trained pretty hard starting the summer going into her sophomore year, hence the big jump in XC and 3000 times from her freshman year.
Yeah its been written about in NYT for insance that her coach limited her to 45 mpw total sophomore year. Don't know what she was doing when she was injured later in highschool.
I also don't know why it matters? I mean, how many minutes would a 5 mile easy run have taken her, in HS? 35? Seems pretty average time commitment. Sometimes hs programs base running on minutes.
I find these arguments funny when high levels of activity from a young age are also credited as reasons for east african success.

Um, not sure if you think I disagree with that statement. I think that would be an accurate thing to say. She is continuing to progress, and her ceiling is unknown. That means it is possible she is very close to or is hitting her ceiling--- or (more likely) she still has yet to hit it. Either way, it is unknown.
