We changed the title to make it more accuarte. Initially the title of the thread was, "HS Coach has his own athlete DQ'd". Please note the athlete ran the mile under protest and finished high enough to qualify to states if him being scratched is overturned.
So on one of our Florida coaching forums, it has been revealed that the DISTANCE coach of the Viera kid has been suspended from coaching at the State Meet in 2 weeks (she’s also the head girl’s coach). Wtf is going on with the FHSAA??
That sounds like a "cover your @$$ move". Firing a black coach while doing absolutely nothing to a white coach is a recipe for disaster regardless of who's fault it is. I think by suspending her they can avoid some accusations of racism but some will certainly occur due to the difference in punishments.
did you see her actions? she threw a temper tantrum and was yelling and screaming on the track as kids were getting ready to start their race. completely unacceptable behavior for a coach, regardless of whether you agree with her or the sprint coach. you can't act like that.
She could have and should have resolved this issue days before the meet even started by talking to the head coach and talking to the athlete. she didn't.
i am not describing coaching as that, but the head coach has final decision. if they go to clerking or the scoring table and say their runner is out, they are out. it doesn't matter if it was a reasonable decision.
im not sure if most of you understand how high school track meets work. i have not absolved this coach of any wrong doing at all. but the coach does have final say over entries and scratches.
Now you're back-tracking what you originally posted. Line-ups and putting kids in and taking them out is a football, baseball, basketball mentality and is a simplistic view that doesn't work with running. No one's arguing the authority of a coach, we get that. The issue at hand is that this IDIOT "coach" can't or doesn't know how to communicate with the athlete. If the athlete is disrespectful and or insubordinate then the coach should take the necessary steps after the meet in private with both the athlete and parent(s). You NEVER confront and humiliate a young athlete out in the open, not too mention while they're on the starting line. A classless and cowardly act on behalf of this so-called "coach". Glad he was fired!
what did i walk back? now remember, almost all of my comments came BEFORE information came out that the coach hadn't decided to take the runner out until he was already at the line.
the original assumption would have been that the coach had told him he was out of the 1600 and that the runner and asst coach decided to run it anyway.
Good thing no one needs to impress you. If you are a coach, you’re a joke and I would never want a child to run for you.
Perhaps the coach lost some competitive edge because of the football coach. He may have been a little out of his mind to have continued to coach beyond what was done to him. We do not know these things. I am not saying what he did was okay. Not at all but there should be some compassion for coaches. It's not 1950.
Wow we are all wrong, and you are always right? Seems like you have your priorities messed up, so get off your mama's lap you loser and get a life! But you can't because you ARE a loser!
It's a district meet which is a championship meet. The coach's job is to win the team title. The athletes job is to contribute as much as he can. Yes, the athletes safety is a priority but running the 3200, 800, and 1600 isn't going to hurt anyone.
I had roughly similar hsvprs as the athlete in question. My junior and senior year, I ran the 3200, 800, and 1600 at our conference meet. This was at a boys only meet that took less than 90 minutes from the first final to the 4x 4. I probably had 45 minutes between the 3200 to the 800 and maybe 25 mins from the 800 to the 1600. It was 90s degrees and humid each year. I ran every event hard and got 2 firsts and 1 second each year. We just barely won conference my junior year and just barely lost out my senior year.
I qualified for state both years a week after the conference meet with PR times so its not like running the triple hurt me.
If i had run 2:11 and no pointed in the 800 i would have been ashamed of myself and I guarantee my coach and teammates would have lost respect for me.
Also- get off my lawn-
At the end of the season "the hay should be in the barn, boy." You must really like that coach to still think that you would not have done better to have run less events!
Kid made it to states in the 1600 2nd at Regionals in 4:24.96. He was 5th in 3200, so it looks like kid and distance coach new what event was his best.
Question is, How does Coach get to be upset about output in 800 when he didn't field his best team in 4x800. Team ran 9:23 with 3 kids that haven't broke 2:20, while earlier in season 'A' squad went 8:29 and 8:31 would have been 2nd at Districts instead of 6th. Appears to me they have 6 kids 2:12 and under (includes 4:34 1600 guy without open 800 time this year) So, coach didn't consider team on the relay's. Why does anyone think Coach is considering team on individual events? This is pure Coaches Ego and nothing less. Glad he is gone.
