This thread was initially entitled, "Kara Goucher + Boston Marathon Controversy" . 4/20 update The BAA has issueda statement herethat amongst other things "we did not deliver on our promise to make it a great day for everyone".
"Down the street at Wellesley, people are, you know, jumping on the course and like, kissing people"
Three separate videos of the Wellesley Scream Tunnel during the 2023 marathon. Not a single spectator is seen jumping the barriers and getting onto the course. Loud, enthusiastic, and RESPECTFUL spectators.
A spot that was once known for runner-spectator kisses before the pandemic still has a raucous atmosphere that athletes and fans love.Subscribe to WCVB on Yo...
I felt that it was appropriate to have Kara in the title of the thread because the initial posts were talking about her take on the situation. Part of the discussion is about the misuse of social media to virtue signal and act as a truth-teller without actually knowing what occurred. It is humorous that someone like Kara would get on their pedestal to preach about what is or is not ok. It would not surprise me in the least if she were behind changing the thread title. It was not "sexist" in the least, though I a bet that was part of her complaint.
Absolute weak sauce. Met with groups who gave their side of the story only, and apologizes because that’s easier. Can’t wait to see what clout-chaser Desir tweets about it next.
It's crazy how Alison, who has never run a marathon, is so chummy with Des, Lauren, and Kara - simply because she wrote a book about being a black.
It's all marketing. These people's 'jobs' are all about virtue signaling to make them and woke people feel like half the country are not as good as them.

My take on the situation is that there are probably too many police there (maybe just because so many were out and about for security reasons), but the party was clearly and aggregiously in violation of race rules. It's also selfish to rush onto the course for your team's runners with little regard for the other people who are trying to make the most of months of hard training.
This Alison person was making Instagram posts about the Boston Marathon being racist in the week leading up to the race. She has been making a living off of the death of Ahmaud Arbery, so it's no small wonder she would identify racism at the event. Like many grifters, she does the very things she accuses others of doing, namely, profiting off of the suffering of the people she claims to be helping or "giving voice to."
I have no idea about the details, but it would not suprise me if at least a few people in the party intentionally provoked a police overreaction so they could use it as ammunition. This is a common strategy in contemporary activism. People need to wise up and stop taking the bait. These tactics are female relational aggression at scale. The ingredients are emotional manipulation, passive and coded aggression, reputational damage, and the use of shame and mandated virtue signaling to demand compliance. This is where people like Kara and Lauren come into the picture. There are lots of upper-middle-class white women driving the takeover of mainstream culture and institutions by emotionally-unstable grifters and psychopaths. Women are more receptive to claims of harm and victimization, and on a cynical level, they're more conscious of their reputations and may be more likely to publicly agree with ideas they don't actually support. To this end, I understand why people are criticizing KG and LF.
“We know what the Boston Marathon means to our communities; it is very personal to so many of you. We know that everyone who participates loves to celebrate the excitement of the race, whether you are an athlete, volunteer, spectator or supporter.
However, this year, we know that we did not deliver on our promise to make it a great day for everyone. We met with two groups last night, who the B.A.A. proudly supports in their running activities, their members and their mission - PIONEERS Run Crew and TrailblazHers Run Co. – two of Boston’s premier clubs for BIPOC runners. They expressed to us their deep concerns that they were not given the chance to enjoy the day and celebrate their friends, families and all participants as they approached Heartbreak Hill – that is on us. It is our job, and we need to do better to create an environment that is welcoming and supportive of the BIPOC communities at the marathon.
We appreciate and rely on the support and services of the eight cities and towns that make up the Boston Marathon course. We could not do it without the first responders and law enforcement agencies across 26.2 miles that is necessary at an event of this scale. We ask for everyone’s support as we move forward to improve the event for generations to come.”
Response? I'd call it a full apology.
Was it warranted? I have no idea but I fully expected it and do applaud them for being proactive about it we don't have to hear about this for months on end.
To me, while I hate the term white privilege, white privilege is knowing that if something happens to you that you dont like, you normally don't have to wonder "was this racism?"
I get why some might have thought they were being targeted based on their race (but I'd blame the neighbor, not the cops) but the wellesley video is pretty striking. No one jumping on the course whereas here they were half across the road.

What does "woke" mean?
Some describe it as being awake to oppressive power structures in society. Others describe it as a religious movement that combines critical theory and postmodernism. I've seen it traced back to gnosticism: an ancient religious belief that an evil god created the world as a prison and that some people with special knowledge can help break all of us out of the alleged prison. People with the special knowledge are woke.

She should see what her husband said about foreigners in Running With The Buffaloes

Yes by all means lets go back to a 25 year old book to deflect from racism in 2023. Typical LR clown. This site is becoming a playground for white supremacy
Pretty sure the only reason Kara is even reposting this is because the Alison person has been retweeting her book left and right and has been on panels. It's all about them book sales.
The problem with the B.A.A. response is that it will not satisfy the people who bought into the narrative of the twitter video from the guy who said that the group was only there to high five and cheer on their friends and the police showed up in large numbers.
The video of people going over the barricade, onto the race course, obstructing athletes and explode loud confetti guns, is crucial context.
Boston Marathon is a professional sporting event. There are barricades for a reason. They've had homemade bombs exploded on this course before, leaving people maimed and murdered (2013). It's not wrong for security to calmly, professionally, stand along the course to keep spectators from jumping over the barricades and doing such things.
Would you jump onto the court at a professional basketball game, during the game, start hugging Lebron, and exploding confetti cannons? College game? High school game?
What do you think would happen if you did?
This post was edited 2 minutes after it was posted.
You are just as bad as the people who have blown this out of proportion. How about researching situations before you take a side.
"After being notified by the B.A.A. three times about spectators traversing the rope barrier and impeding runners, the Newton Police Department responded respectfully and repeatedly requesting that spectators stay behind the rope."
Finally, we hear the other side. The original post was one sided.
It seems to me the BAA is implying with this statement, that it's okay for spectators to jump over course barricades, obstruct runners, and shoot off confetti cannons on the course, during the Boston Marathon and that the police did something wrong by stopping that.

100% that's what they are implying at least... as long as your group has majority "POC" representation. Remember folks, its racist to hold POCs to the same standard of behavior as the rest of us, the left says we just have to let them do whatever they want because they can't help it.

What does "woke" mean?
It means you are "awake" to slights and controversies that are complete contrived to any sane and rational person. I'm a white guy, if I ran onto the course by the finish line, to you think they'd tackle and arrest me?

Is this video available anywhere other than this website, like youtube? It sounds like the crucial video but I can't access the webpage. I keep getting a warning that my AdBlocker is on even though I have turned it off multiple times. Never had this problem with any other website. The only videos I see posted is the one filmed by the guy in the crowd of the police standing in line. I can't find a single video of them jumping barriers or shooting the confetti cannons.
