Webb had 3 seconds on Colin in the mile but Colin definitely had better strength. I’m not giving Webb 7 seconds over him in the 2, although maybe Sahlman could’ve been faster too
You are way off on Webbs strength , he lost to one guy in HS his senior year in Ritz, who still has CR by over 25 seconds in Michigan over tons if all timers. Webb was 11th as a true Frosh in NCAA Xc
Sahlman was what? 140th +?
call me when Sahlman also runs 27:20’s for 10K
or 13:11 for 5K
and those were 14 years ago? Or so?
Webb was way better way stronger its not debatable really.
is what it is
Yes, I agree that Webb was stronger than Colin is currently. However, I would like to note that, XC-wise, you cannot compare straight times against each other and you cannot compare two different states with different depths at different points in time. Courses are different so times will vary among courses. And as for depth, California has a lot more depth than most other states around the nation, partially because they have a very large population. Again, I agree with you that Webb was stronger but there are many factors that you compared here that aren't comparable.
As for times, Colin has already run 13:42 in the 5k (which he only planned on running and only ran once) and a 3:47 in the 1500, rivaling some of Webb's freshman year times. All in all, I think Colin is still getting started and will prove to be one of the greatest American distance runners of all time.

Webb was stronger in high school? Maybe if you’re using speed rating which is horribly messed up across eras, or just flat out guessing. Nothing he did indicated better strength. Speed, obviously, without a doubt.
Strangely, Riggs seemed agitated and miserable in her post race interview while the other ladies could barely contain their delight (at least the four from Colorado). Cant tell if she hates being interviewed or if she was really burning for that record and had a hard time swallowing not getting it. I would say dragging 8 other girls under 10 is an incredible accomplishment all by itself though.

It's so hard to predict. He could go in different directions. We'll have a better idea in about two years.

She was in obvious distress the final laps of that race. I'm sure she wanted to put it behind her, the sooner the better.

Riggs doesn't mind being interviewed. She was trying to break 9:40 and she didn't even comes close. She was upset about that.
The good news is that it's still early in the season so she will have more chances. I'm not sure if she will break 9:40, but she will at least get very close.
Might be just me, but I believe Aaron Sahlman’s best distance right now is the 3200, not the 800 or 1600/mile. Yes, 1:48.9 -1:49.07 are very good times, but the kid has raced a 8:37c 3200 (indoors at the Armory as a junior), finishing 6th at Running Lane after pacing the entire field for 2.5 miles to record setting XC 5k times as a junior, and of course won NXN in a surprise this past season. I don’t know who’s dictating his racing schedule, but it’d be a shame if he didn’t race 3200/2miles all out this senior year.
I agree. I think currently the highschool scene is very strong at mile/2mile, and I understand a guy like him thinking why be (arguably) the third best 2 miler on your team when you can be the best 800 guy. He's definitely got a chip on his shoulder as well, and I think his personality kind of fits into the 800. It's a physical race, with a little less camradrie because a lot of the top guys weren't superstars in XC like the mile/2mile types are. I think he'll be a great miler, and I hope he has fun focusing on the 8 before he goes to NAU where he will likely be focusing on the mile and up.
Irene Riggs is a great interview and enjoys doing it... she loves the sport... she was disappointed some by her time and perhaps somewhat upset with herself for forging such a suicidal pace....she knows she can run faster with a much more judicial pacing effort.
