Most people thought Russia wouldn't invade because it was a terrible idea even if it was over in 3 days.
Zelensky himself thought the idea that Russia would invade was ridiculous a few days before the invasion and even made of the west for telling him it was going to happen.
Putin wants control of Ukraine's government. He has control of Belarus. Belarus is still Belarus. That's what he wants in Ukraine in order to keep NATO out. This isn't complicated he's been saying he would never accept NATO in Ukraine for 18+years.
Some of your writing seems to show you have some basic understanding of Russia, but then you post stuff like this, that sounds like you didn't really have an understanding--because I think that anyone that watched Putin roll his tanks and troops around Ukraine and thought, "Oh, no, he says it's just practice, he won't invade"--anyone that thought liek that, really was either not paying attention to what he's been doing in the east & south, or just engaging in wishful thinking.
Didn't know a hell of a lot about Russia but did think they had a better army than this joke, damn they suck. This is a total butt kicking for Ukraine other than the missles and picking on women and children which appears to be all the Russians are capable of.
Why would anyone be afraid of Russia, let them come. Imagine what Detroit would do do that army.
I agree with you about their armed forces in that they are an absolute joke. The US could enter now and destroy them in two days.
The main problem is their nuclear weapons.
Do doubt Putin would blow up Russia which is what he would be doing if he played this nuke thing. Time to stop letting him run the show, he should be afraid of us. And he was when Trump was in charge. Why........didn't want to be nuked.

Nobody wins a nuclear war. He is not afraid of us. His only fear is the loss of power.
And just to emphasise here...if all these people are fools, you should approach the White House and NATO with your knowledge and get sent over there quicksmart to negotiate peace.
Off you go bro...
Everyone at the White House is a fool...
The people who research this stuff for a living are saying they don't know how it will turn out yet.

Russia considers NATO in Ukraine to be an existential threat. Russia will not just accept defeat in Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces conducted a major successful counterattack around Mykolayiv in the past several days, and Russian forces continued to secure territorial gains only around Mariupol on March 18. Russian forces face growing morale and supply problems, including growing reports of self-mutilation among Russian troops to avoid deployment to Ukraine and shortages of key guided munitions. The Ukrainian General Staff continued to report on March 18 that Russia has failed to achieve its strategic objectives in Ukraine, including destroying the Ukrainian Armed Forces, capturing Kyiv, and establishing control over Ukraine to the east bank of the Dnipro River—the first time the Ukrainian General Staff included this territorial conquest as an explicit Russian objective. The Ukrainian General Staff additionally stated that Ukrainian forces “continue step by step to liberate the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine in all directions” on March 18, the first Ukrainian mention of conducting counterattacks “in all directions.”
Key Takeaways * The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russia has “significantly exhausted its human resources” due to battle casualties, cases of self-mutilation to avoid deployment, and psychological factors.
* Ukrainian forces likely conducted a successful counteroffensive against Russian forces around Mykolayiv in the past several days.
* The ability of Ukrainian forces to conduct a successful major counterattack indicates Russian forces attempting to encircle Mykolayiv likely overstretched, and Russian forces are unlikely to have the capability to resume offensive operations toward Odesa in the near term.
* Russian forces did not conduct any offensive operations northwest or northeast of Kyiv on March 18.
* Russian forces continue to make steady progress reducing the Mariupol pocket.
* Ukrainian forces halted a Russian attempt to advance southeast of Kharkiv, through the city of Izyum, in the past 24 hours.
* Russia is deploying additional reserves to reinforce the Kharkiv axis of advance.
* Russian and proxy forces made minor territorial gains north of the city of Severodonetsk in Luhansk Oblast and will likely assault the city itself in the next 24-48 hours.
* Ukrainian military intelligence created an official website to provide support and guidance to Ukrainian fighters and civilians in Russian-occupied territory.
Just in general...the west is doing the only thing it can, should and must do. Whichever way it goes, at this point the outcome cannot end in any good way for Putin.
He cannot disengage and withdraw unless it is to claim 'some sort of victory'
He cannot annex Ukraine without resistance, it cannot be 'given' to him, because it will enhance his power. If he succeeds, it would be at such great cost that Russia will take a long time to recover.
If the resistance overcomes him, he will be tried as a war criminal.
The longer it goes on, the more the economic pain, and even Russian peasants will resist, but not before the oligarchs have long before plotted his downfall.
It is a longer 'game' than most of you guys realise...probably because you engage on twitter ;-)
Putin can still come out of this just fine. China is with him. India is with him. Even Mexico is still trading with Russia.
People who think the war is already lost and the long term consequences already known are fools.
I read a few days ago that China, India, Brazil, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are still giving Russia Most Favored Nation trade status. I believe that Bangladesh is working on a currency exchange to continue trading with Russia. That’s a big part of the world population. Russia will be forced to find alternatives to McD’s, Coca Cola and Nike. Europe will need to find alternative major sellers of oil, natural gas, grains and fertilizer components. The US will need to find alternative buyers of the US dollar and treasuries to keep the economy alive in 2023 and beyond.
And just to emphasise here...if all these people are fools, you should approach the White House and NATO with your knowledge and get sent over there quicksmart to negotiate peace.

Anyone who says they do is just guessing.
Is this you trying to justify your legendary "it will be over in 5 days"
I agree with you about their armed forces in that they are an absolute joke. The US could enter now and destroy them in two days.

Your statement here was over the top. U.S. is not good at pacifying any nation. U.S. couldn't pacify Korea. U.S. couldn't pacify Viet Nam. U.S. didn't pacify Afghanistan. Pacifying Russia would mean marching into Moscow and pacifying Russians there. Do you want to rethink your two day statement? Every action U.S. takes over there in Ukraine increases the risk of nuclear weapons being used. If used, will start with smaller tactical nukes. I stated over a month ago, the best thing would be for Biden to encourage Zelenskyy to surrender. Putin views Biden is shooting down his planes. Putin views Biden is setting Russian tanks on fire. Remember, Pearl Harbor occurred because U.S. stopped selling Japan oil. You may believe it is benign for Biden to give Ukraine thousands of javelins and AT4s.

You better believe the main problem is nuclear weapons. Russia has a formidable arsenal of high-tech nuclear weapons that scares the daylights out of the Pentagon.
Start with Russia's Tirskon hypersonic missile then can carry up to a 200 kt warhead! How about their Satan 2 ICBM that can carry 10 MIRV warheads that packs as much as 8 megatons of explosive power - more than 400 times as powerful as the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki.
And if that's not enough, Russian has the p super-torpedo that can reach speeds of 115 mph in the water & carry up to a 2 megaton warhead. Imagine the destruction this would cause on one of he U.S.'s coastal cities!
We better hope that cooler heads will prevail between the two superpowers & that they both remember the Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) principle.
A terrifying Cold War concept has suddenly resurfaced in our collective consciousness. Here’s what you need to know about Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD),...

Can you think of any modern warfare battle where a major power has lost 5 military Generals in the first few weeks of the Campaign?
People keep asking... When will Russia send in their "good troops"? Well folks, you are looking at their good troops. You are looking at their best and brightest military strategists. The world is getting a wake up call as to what the Russian Military capability is. I don't say this to demean Russia as a country of a citizenry. Instead, it is a reflection on how a brutal, thieving Fascist like Putin will cause all around him to be corrupt thieves as well. So, even the Military will get neglected and pillaged yet the leader is fed lies about their military superiority.

It’s really not over the top. No, I will not rethink that. My statement was about destroying the army in place, and not marching into Russian territory.
In what part of what I said makes you think I am in favor of the US fighting there? Without the the nukes we definitely would and wipe them out just as I described. With the nukes I agree with you in that we should not get involved militarily.
The Russians are in foreign non fortified areas. There is a huge difference between attacking an army in their own territory and one that is foreign to them where they are sitting ducks like they are now. That is why Ukraine is able to fight them off.
if the Ukrainian army tried to launch an offensive on Russia after this, they would not be able to pull it off for these reasons.

Doubling down as you are is doubling down on stupid. If U.S. could in theory destroy X number of Russian military vehicles, X number of Russian military artillery and X number of Russian military aircraft does not give Ukraine a victory. It took U.S. over a dozen years to pacify Iraqi teenage guerrillas from 2003. Your comments that U.S. can destroy Russian military in two days is not accurate and based on zero facts.

If nuclear response was off the table American air power could reduce Russia's military in Ukraine to complete combat ineffectiveness in a very short time.
Ukrainian ground forces would mop up the remnants.
The insurgency in Iraq is the Ukrainians in this situation not the Russians... lol...
