Two words, fake injury
Two words, fake injury
He ran his last 5k in 16:10 from 30 to 35k and there were still 7.2km to go.
He would have run the last 5k in what, high 17? He completely crashed out. I think he could have easily finished but he was under big threat to finish behind Kosgei.

Prolly had too much dim sum in Chinatown. That makes the last 3 miles ROUGH.
I actually had to drop out of a marathon at 9 miles because of that.
I swear, on the TV broadcast, I saw Alberto at the 22 mile mark giving directions to Galen while dressed as a Hasidic Jew. That sneaky man! Nice fake beard / curly sideburns, though.
cudos to rupp for sticking in to the bitter end, that is, till you're nearly dead.
if you are not doing great at the half, and still want to hang in there (you should), you should make a good effort to pick it up for a few miles, and if there is nothing there, you best drop out.
regarding rupp and doping, i think the group had the thinking that they were playing it fair, as compared to the competition that got all the records on EPO, and the middle distance guys from the Atlas mountains with the HGH, testosterone, vitamins, blood doping, and later EPO...
so in this regard, al sal group was quite clean, but compared to a guy that does not take anything, they're dirty as sin.
this al sal saga demonstrates that PEDs will allways be in the grey area, as nutrition and training can be manipulated, to the point where it becomes unfair.
you can eat bull testes for testosterone, yams for steroids, and you can concentrate those natural ingredients, you can take "natural" friently bacteria that transforms plant sterols and cholesterol into androstenedione and percursor testosterone,
you can isolate protein peptides, you can use altitude tents, you can microdose, you can use natural EPO and testosterone that won't test, and there are a million other things you can do.
face it, track and field has been a combination of fiction and reality for our entire lives.
back in the day, one hundred years ago, doping was 100% OK, with anything and everything thrown into a boxers, or even football, baseball players diet. booze, pills, amphetamines, coke. The Babe was a coke head. etc.etc.
the brojoes, leaders of the sport, may want to go into the dark alleys of the sport, the back rooms, and learn what's really up. as they still are pretty wet behind the ears. they can send an agent to colorado, and the gyms and get the low down on microdosing, and peptides, and the etc.
i know all this and i'm only on the fringe, bumping into guys that do PEDS, or are within a group.
the al sal caper, is such a good thing, it's forced the issue, to look at the grey area, and deal with the PED issues maturely.
the crowd, the irrate mob, wants to scape goat NOP, and well they need the hiding, but the witch hunt that is going on now, is not productive, and you want to look at the whole picture.
with the PED testing program, it is an Orwellian nightmare for the athletes, to be tracked and tested, and have their penis examined by some weird official, who could sleazily be a perv, or power monger, or do gooder, or whatever.
you want to legalize PEDs, and report what you do and how much.
you want to award a medal and price for the clean athlete, and a prize for the no holds barred athlete.
that way you can learn something from the process, the sportsmedicine sciences,
for sure the lance armstrongs, the victor contes, the al salazars, have the most valuable knowledge scientifically, and
the process - of the letsrun mob - and the do gooders - is to drive all the good science underground and kill it.
at the end to the day, the BROJOES and LETSRUN mob are evil.
= Orwellian nightmare - and suppress valuable sports medical information we all can benefit from.
Hitler thought he was doing good too.
Get it together.

imagine the horror of NOP fans at the following headline . . .
Olympic medalist Galen Rupp gets CHICKED!
This sounds like it was actually medical. Please reevaluate your life and why you are wishing ill fortune upon others. Regardless of whether you are fan of his or not, no one should wish medical troubles upon someone else.

Great post! He deserves all the mocking and ridicule he's getting. Where are all the Nike fans and employees trashing Flagstaff Ben? There's a Rupp thread and Hasay thread. Where are you all??
I don't understand why he would go right to the marathon for his first race back from injury, especially now that the trials has the gold standard. Should have done a 10 miler, half marathon or 25k.

The guy from Flagstaff who has coached a CONVICTED Doper? He’s not worth mentioning here.

:D :D :D
That’s funny! You made my day!
On a serious note, I did notice Galen kind of limping at around the 1:04 tv clock.

Please point out anywhere or anytime I've wished ill fortune on Rupp. If he had manned up and dumped AlSal years ago I'd likely have been a fan. But here Rupp is ducking and covering for AlSal, and most likely faking injury too.
Rupp should retire, he jumped his shark years ago.

Agreed. It occurs to me( just mere speculation) that he has a contract with the race organizers to run Chicago. I do know that Kannouchi had one back in the days, but KK’s contract had a clause that he couldn’t run any other full marathon but Chicago.

That's why you are not a world class athlete. They don't just give up because they are being dropped. They fight on
Yea totally, you wait until mile 23 when you're still on 2:08 pace to do so...
Rupp is definitely a doper. I'm ready to move on from him.
To see where his fitness is for trials.
To see what his injury status was.
Results: Not good. Done.

Enough of these lame ass comments. Can anyone clarify why he was being treated by medics? Did he have a tear as a result of his surgery? It’s so lame that people will make critical comments about someone who is been treated by medics. But that’s let’s run
I agree. Unfortunately there's a bunch of idiots on this website.
Personally, I'm impressed that he ran so well in his very first race recovering from that surgery.
I hope he's doing well, and I look forward to his ongoing progress.

He got dropped by the leaders in the 7th mile. Just before halfway, he was dropped by Mo Farah.
Meaning logically Mo was dropped by the leaders in the 7th mile too. Why is he even running marathons? He surely must realize by now he will never be a top marathoner. He should go back to the track, where at least he'll be in the mix.
He didn't sound ready. He should not have raced. He mentioned his calf was giving him issues in the build-up, as he lost a lot of muscle-mass due to the Achilles surgery. I'm figuring his calf absolutely cramped/strained at Mile 23. Bummer, he is tough as hell.
Someone said he went down rounding a corner, which suggests a strain.
Late in a marathon cramps aren’t uncommon which could be an electrolyte sort of issue.
What this doesn’t look like is mental collapse - like Farah , seemed like he was trying to gut out a finish.
