Cuppa posters have already said this, but 0 cigarettes is the best way to go. Obviously, 6-7 cigarettes is better than a pack, and 2 cigarettes is better than 6-7, and so on. Stopping smoking and fighting your addiction is hard but breathing for the rest of your life will be harder.
Well, it's commendable that you're trying to reduce the number of cigarettes daily. Of course, it is better not to smoke, as it affects our health. Undoubtedly, every cigarette smoked will slow you down. I used to smoke regular cigarettes myself, and I perfectly understand how much willpower it takes to at least reduce the number of cigarettes smoked. However, I had the strength to switch to heated tobacco - NEAFS sticks. This is a tobacco-free product. Thus, I plan to eventually stop smoking anything at all. This is a great alternative right now.
I don’t really get why folks smoke. I find that the chest pump that weight training yields has similarities with the more “braced up” feeling I’d feel when I’d occasionally smoke socially.
My wife used smoke maybe a pack every two weeks. She runs about 20 miles a week at a 9:30 pace. She told her doctor about it and she told her that it’s not great for her but really not enough to cause a lot of problems.
She did cut down to a pack every two weeks and it worked for a while but she became insanely irritable. So she went back and then finally got down to a pack a month.
I asked her why she still smokes and she said “it’s amazing”. I guess all of her sorority sisters did and oddly, a lot of guys found it sexy when she entered the corporate world.

I've always wondered this but will it really hurt my running if i smoke just 6-7 cigarettes a day? I used to smoke more than this but im cutting down.
Most definitely will have an impact. Interesting side story. Back in the early 20th century Tour de France riders used to smoke a cigarette before a big hill climb as it was believed that smoking opened up the lungs lol

If she said she was smoking a pack every two weeks, it was probably a pack a week or quite a bit more. Women often smoke in the car or on break at work where their husbands won't see. Or out with their friends, etc.
As a doctor I can say emphatically that nothing good comes from smoking. People are quick to say how this person or that person didn't get lung cancer so what's the big deal. Nicotine causes so many health problems that fly under the radar.
You aren't going to win many races if you get cancer.

Every time you smoke anything, carbon monoxide enters your blood stream, killing any red blood cells that it comes into contact with. It takes 30 days for your body to replenish them. I guess it just depends on how many viable red blood cells you need. And that's a question only you can answer.
I smoke a pack of cigs every time that I win a race or set a big pr. Now whenever it’s time to kick my craving for nicotine helps me find another gear. I was able to run sub 17 in the 5k using this method.
