To me this is fair. He was in a tough spot and from what I have read did a lot of questioning. This may be true, but it would be against the WADA code. The panel explicitly found a violation and the code allows reductions for cooperation, but not elimination of the sanction.

Chancellor Renu Khator, Athletic Director Chris Pezman, Track & Field Head Coach Leroy Burrell. I as an alumni of our great University and Track and Field program implore you to fire Steve Magness immediately. He is every bit as guilty as Alberto Salazar the person he has accused. He did not use this fiasco as a way to help clean up the sport of track & field but just to make a name for himself to further his standing in the sport. Please investigate for yourselves and you'll understand exactly what has transpired.

Calling on Leroy Burrell to fire somebody because they are guilty of doping violations. Oh, how rich! What a country!

You got something concrete on Burrell? Of course you don't! Just shooting your mouth off ala Magness.

Magness was an assistant coach, not an athlete.

The technicality is that Magness ran USA Club XC this next year which requires him to have a USATF membership and subject to the testing pool. Even if he testifies in Salazar's favor that he didn't plan to compete or didn't inform Salazar he was going to compete again, he and Brown will likely still get convicted. Does Magness care? If he gets a doping ban is he not allowed to coach collegiately during the ban?

If feel like if you are going to convict Salazar of the infusion, you should have to simultaneously give Magness a doping ban, but they didn't and never showed any intent to.

Doesn't matter. Magness took the drugs, Magness should be banned. Alberto is clean in all of this.

Aside from that, you're missing the point with the analogy you're attempting to make here. It's about prosecutorial discretion. They don't have to charge Magness. They can, presumably, for aiding Salazar in the experiments. But he's essentially a whistle blower, so there's no reason to believe he will conduct further experiments on his own or commit any doping violations, so there's nothing to gain from prosecuting.

Lets not forget Magness went to dr brown in High school. That visit took him form 4:17 to 4:01 in the mile.

How did he know about dr brown back then? Yes, Adam Goucher went to DR Brown first along with Kennedy and God knows who else. Madness went to DR Brown because he knew Brown was helping to skirt the rules with top athletes. It wasn't a coincidence that magness ending up choosing dr Brown. Madness was will to cheat at an early age and when Nike released him for banging a NOP runner he fought back

Isn't it strange that the measure of a successful coach today seems to be how close they can walk to the doping border?

Please, Steve was more than happy to research, suggest, and pursue these running health and nutrition experiments.

I agree that Magness and Salazar should both be banned. Salazar has been knowingly and openly playing with fire for decades. You don't call USADA on a weekly basis if you aren't worried you're stepping over the line or getting close. Personally, I think he should have got a lifetime ban for his behavior at the 2016 trials instead of a 4 year ban for what is essentially the J-walking of drug abuse (L-Carnitine is a legal low-level hormone that was administered legally just at too high a dose. Sharing prescriptions with a family member also kind of a joke). I agree with the panel that it seems like he legitimately tried to keep things legal but he didn't and now that and his habit of burning bridges are coming back to bite him. Totally fine with all of that.

The real issue is that we all seem to be treating the way Magness and the Gouchers chose to bring this information forward as brave and commendable. Magness sat on his butt and held onto this for way too long, then ruined any chance of a real investigation by going to the media before USADA could get anything started. This would be fine if he had any hard evidence to offer, but all we've got from Magness and his crew is an unlabeled rx bottle that could be anything, a single photo that's easily replicated, and a bunch of stories including the one that he himself doped. Yes Salazar is guilty but what if this were someone else who wasn't? With the way this played out and was received, any former runner could make up the same evidence and stories with a bunch of friends in an afternoon and just torch a coach's career.

Salazar intended to toe the line but ended up cheating. Magness intended to muck-rake his former boss, and we lucked out with a conviction despite the lack of evidence he brought and the early alarm bells he gave to NOP. They both suck but now the one that produces quality runners is banned and the one that sleeps with quality runners is a hero. Some uniformity would be nice USADA...

Because he bandited the turkey trot.
