Nice performance by Austin. Basically he was lapped, and came back strong to win

A great time by Austin but the fastest ever Iowan is still Phil Coppess in 2:10.05.
I've seen this kid compete several times in high school and in college--always very competitive and super tough so it's great to see him doing well now. For a small school, Drake has developed quite a few distance runners over the years but a quick look at their roster now shows that they're trying to go the international route. Don't know about it being a big name sports school but will always cheer for Drake's basketball team except when they're playing the Hawks!

Another 2:12 America male. Yay!
Why so salty? He had a great race & has made great strides to go from his college PRs to 1:02/2:12 & become the US Champ. This race gets great depth but the top top US guys go to the majors. It is great to have a 2:12 guy emerge from this race and become a contender at the Trials.
Solid run Brogan!

Can anyone confirm if Austin was down by 400m at any point in the race? I know Llano was over a minute ahead at one point. We may finally have someone who won a marathon after being "lapped"!

He was down 1:56 at 35k (so well over 400 meters behind).
Or maybe just maybe..... wrote:

He has the right attitude, you don't have to be a "pro" runner or part of some group to run 2:12.
Could it be that a training group never reached out to him???
Not likely considering he trains under Tinman.
Tinman is not a funded training group.
Man, how much faster could this guy be if he had an Instagram account and a YouTube channel?!

The real question is how much faster could this guy be if he was coached by a Magic Wizard.
Boone, IA has had a decent decade for a HS with only about 500 kids. As another poster mentioned, his younger brother ran 8:51/4:07. That same year him and a teammate, Albert Meier, both broke 9:00 on the track and both qualified individually for NXN in cross country.
Boone also produced Danna Herrick who currently trains with Hansons Brooks in Michigan I believe.
Nice decade of results for a little town in central Iowa.
Congrats to Brogan!

What do you mean?! Tinman IS a wizard
Go a step further. Shelby Houlihan was named the top female by USATF and Schweizer was arguably the best female runner in the NCAA this year. They are all from unpopulated Iowa. Mike Jay also likes to remind us that the US 2 mile record holder, Jenny Simpson, was born in Iowa.

I suppose this is quite unusual, but probably not very rare for a leader to blow up and someone else run conservatively.
It happened in Brighton earlier this year:
The leader was 50:08 at 15k and finished 2nd
https://resultscui.active.com/participants/2899446The eventual was 51:35 at 15k

This guy running 2:12 is completely different than a fully sponsored pro running 2:12. This proves how ridiculous it is that the pros are stuck at 2:12.

He has taken to the roads very well. Good for him.
EPO is a hell of a drug.
Brogan:
"I knew that this potential was here, and he’s untapped it. I improved my half-marathon from a 64:09 to a 62:39. I took a minute off of my 10-mile PR.”
I don't think Brogan understands the difference between "tapped" and "untapped". If Tinman "untapped" Brogan's potential, then nothing happened.
He is my hero. He is everyone's hero. He is a BLUE COLLAR RUNNER!!!

The pros just have not discovered that fresh Iowa air!
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
