Would it matter? I can't see him beating this. Mayer has some crazy speed, explosiveness, strength, agility thing going on.
Really strong in discus and shot put...
Guess he was on the strength explosiveness side of the equation
Javelin result??
This wasn't the Olympics and Eaton would have beaten Mayer in 5 events but it's pretty crazy that Mayer won or tied for the top mark in 9 of the 10 events at the meet.
Incredible. It will take a while to digest this.
I thought Eaton’s record would last for longer. His throws weren’t great, but his running and LJ were.
Wow, amazing!

Eaton would have beaten Mayer in 2 of those 5 events by only a hair (long jump and 110 hurdles), and marginally in the 100. He would beat Mayer substantially in the 400 & 1500. Problem is that Mayer would beat Eaton substantially in 4-5 events!!
No chance for Eaton.
Eaton is better in the sprints and jumps, but Mayer is not far behind and cleans up in the throws. His abilities at sprints and field events is the best we have ever seen in the decathlon.
Dumb comment, "How scared would Ashton Eaton be....." Eaton was the best in his time. That's the only thing that counts. He dominated the event. He left because he achieved what he wanted to and wanted to move on. I'm sure he would have the utmost respect for anyone to break his record. How many decathletes can move into a new event and be World Class? Eaton did it in one season of running the 400 meter hurdles.
Eaton had a huge amount open to improve in the throws and he had no competition during his time, which I would expect is why he retired so young. He should absolutely come back now. This should give him the impetus to train hard for World's and Olympics. It is obviously not the case that he would have no chance against Mayer, given that Mayer had to pr in almost every event to beat Eaton's world record, and given that Eaton could easily improve in the throws because he was not coming close to maximizing there. In other words, he could devote a higher proportion of his training time to the throws and would realize far more gain than loss. Still, a tremendous performance from Mayer and very unexpected.

So what you are saying Eaton could at ease improve his throwing, and voila! He's got the WR again? Really now? Are you that naive to think it can be done that easily? You don't think he could possibly have just near maxed out at his throwing? Eaton is also nowhere near Mayer in the pole vault and high jump. You think he can just will himself into improving that too?
You do not think Mayer can then do the same for his two weakest events, the 400 & 1500?? Mayer is much younger and keeps improving. One could then say he could approach 9500 if he really wanted to.
So the marathon and the decathlon both went on the same day in different places? Wow, impressive.
Don’t disagree with the above but Come on the guy has a point - Eaton was so World Class in some events (which set him apart the rest of both contemporaries and historical greats) that there was little incentive to work harder on events just to become less mediocre.
Nevertheless I don’t see a return happening, Eaton has been fully out of the game for 2 years, too long for any athletic event and moreso for such an unforgiving discipline
"....Eaton is nowhere near Mayer in the pole vault and high jump..." You're kidding aren't you? Eaton had a best of 2.11 in the high jump and 5.40 in the pole vault. Mayer's best are 2.09 and 5.45.

Eaton did that during a decathlon?? Are you sure? Mayer did his during.
Eaton did a lot of events as stand alone single events performed on different days. Likely when he was peaking for that event and wanted to see what he could do well rested. Not sure why but he did that. Mayer doesn't do much in the way of stand alone events. His marks are actually DURING a decathlon. BIG difference.
I'd have to say Eaton's biggest disappointment that must haunt him every night is not pushing just a tad harder to crack 45.00 in 400 that day. 44.99
Sort of sad
Wow crazy didn't think that would be going down anytime soon.
So basically Eaten dominates Mayer in the three runs, Mayer dominates in the three throws, they split the two jumps pretty much evenly, so they are pretty much even in those, but the the two events that aren't straight up running, jumping or throwing - hurdles and pole vault, Eaton wins the hurdles by a little but Mayer gets the win by crushing the pole vault.
Basically it was running (Eaton) against throwing (Mayer) and everything else comes out even except then Mayer pulls off a much better pole vault to take the WR.
