Agreed - love that she exposed everyone here for what they are.
Including yourself of course.

Actually, the mile race is steeped in white male nostalgia because of the never ending glorification of Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute barrier.

Isn't just about everything in the civilized world steeped in white male nostalgia. It wasn't just the mile - pretty much all distance running until the East Africans came along.
As a North American, I want Sheila to do well when there wasn't an American woman in the race but after she made her ignorant and insulting views public, I completely flipped and hoped she would do poorly.
Running and track people don't have time for these progressive losers.

Hey buddy, Siberia doesn't count as North America.
Mile was a unit of measurement. Humans weren't close to 4 mins and everybody thought it was impossible to run that fast. A guy does it after the world war and everybody is amazed at the human spirit. The race is celebrated for that reason. Of course being fair people, we encourage everyone to give it their all and achieve what they thought they could not. Women, men, dogs, whatever.
That's it. Sheila was completely wrong and showed her true colors of being a weird jealous hater of people not like her.
Boom!
Going to miss Sheila, using circa 2007 Dyestat lingo, she was a hard worker
Will go down as the chick that thought running the mile was sexist. What a wonderful legacy.

Only in your mind, it will.

What a sad person you are.

Personally I don't see the big deal because she's pretty much right. Nobody really cares about the mile outside the USA and maybe the UK, and really only men care about the mile because they want to break the magical glorified 4 minute barrier.
Now obviously the mile race is not some evil chauvinist conspiracy, but you might as well be honest about who the race appeals to and why.
Now back to the point of the thread. Good for Sheila Reid, she was a pretty good runner and I wish her the best in her graduate studies.
BS. All kinds of people love the mile. Sheila was just mad that a woman couldn't break 4 and embrace the magic of the Mile.
exactly. The 1500 is stupid. Its not 4, not 3.5, but 3 3/4 laps. No other race covers such a random fraction of a track. There isn't a 300m sprint. Sure a mile is 9.34 something meters longer than 4 laps, but close enough. 9 for the steeple or 15 for the 5k can be the women's "4 minute mile" if it matters that much.
She's not saying the mile itself is sexist, but that there's no real equivalent to a Sub-4 mile for Women. I can't disagree with that, but for me I'd say 4:10 for the women's 1500m is about the correct mark.

And everyone gets to pick what they are. If I want to be a dog and race with the dogs, nobody, not even the IAAF can stop me.

One mile is imperial, kings & queens. Metric (1500m) is from Age of Enlightenment which overlapped with French Revolution. All the imperial measurements are silly and backwards.
Sheila just stated a fact. It was pretty weird how the trolls overreacted to that, and it was really sad to see guys always trying to tear her down because of that. She's still immensely talented, but injuries have taken their toll and it's time to move on in life. I wish her all the best.

What does it really have to do with sex and races? It's just the nice-round figure and historically it was once an impossible mark, just like the sub-2 marathon right now. Is Nike's sub-2 project also sexist because women will never be able to do it?
I am an Asian and not even a middle distance runner, but still I am inspired by Bannister's first sub-4, just as much as I am inspired by Naoko Takahashi first sub 2:20 in the marathon.

Nowhere did she say "WHITE male nostalgia," just "male nostalgia." I agree with the poster that said it was more about the round number than male chauvinism. You guys will pick apart anyone for anything.

Is it also true that the 100m is steeped in black male and black female nostalgia? I don't hear or see her remarking on that.
I worked at a charter school in a major US city for much of this past year. The school had a "Feminist Club" and the club's promotional flyers mentioned "equity" and "intersectionality." The school celebrated women's history month ("herstory") but never men's history month.
