Do you want to talk about major sports or about track and field? It's a niche market. That said, I'm surprised that with the proliferation of cable channels it's not possible for someone to pick this up for a live broadcast. I guess NBC Gold is the best we've got--an obscure channel for what by American standards is an obscure sport.

Showtime = Men's 800 startin
How many advance in each steeple heat?

So you'd expect NBCSN or the Olympic Channel to put on qualifying for 8 hours today? Maybe show the 10ks on TV but a lot of sports have some stuff online now. PGA golf. Early groups go off online only.
Today's schedule is not that great. NBC gold needs a monthly subscription and a one/off subscription.
Frankly, I would rather have the distance stuff online anyway. When they put anything over 1 mile on TV, they cut away from the race for commercials/field events/interviews. It's infuriating. I will gladly pay $70 per year to be able to watch all the distance races in their entirety.

As did Windle - DNS
Anyone have info on either?

Agreed with this, $70 per year is a no-brainer in my mind. I get the hesitancy with paying $150 for flotrack, but $70 for all the Diamond League meets plus USAs? That's a great deal.

Except every major sporting event that isn't on CBS/Fox/NBC/ABC isn't actually free. And the price of getting those other channels those events are on is a lot more than $75 a year. And all-access passes for other major sports run in the hundreds of dollars.
I think people just want complain about having to pay for stuff so they latch on to the "growing the sport" talking point.
For those of you with jobs or for those of you who don't want to pay $75 bucks to watch, here is what has happened so far. I have paid to watch but have been watching World Cup but now am watching track.
Women's Steeple
The women’s steeple heats were without drama as all of the big players advanced including Olympians Emma Coburn, Courtney Frerichs and Shalaya Kipp. Only six women came into the meet with a seasonal best under 9:50 and all but one of them moved on with sixth seed Courtney Coppinger being the only casualty.
Top 6 Steeplechase Seeds/Results
1 9:08.13 Emma Coburn - won heat 1.
2 9:20.84 Courtney Frerichs - won heat 2
3 9:44.34 Shalaya Kipp - auto qualifier in heat 1(3rd)
4 9:44.80 Mel Lawrence - riunner-up in heat #2
5 9:48.57 Grayson Murphy - final time qualifier with 10:01.77 clocking.
6 9:49.04 Courtney Coppinger- eliminated after running 10:03 in heat #2.
Women's 800
The heat 800 heats also went according to form as the top 4 seeds all won one of the four heats. Of the 10 women entered with a seasonal best under 2:01.50, nine of them moved on the semifinals with the lone casualty being 9th seed Darroneisha Lott who was eliminated after finishing 6th (2:04.82) in heat #2.
The biggest drama occurred off the track as NCAA champ Sammy Watson was a DNS.
Top 10 800 Seeds / Results
1 1:56.86 Ajee' Wilson - won heat 3
2 1:58.35 Charlene Lipsey - won heat 1
3 1:59.36 Raevyn Rogers - won heat 4
4 1:59.70 Ce'aira Brown - won heat 2
5 2:00.67 Emily Richards - finished 4th in heat #3, snagged a time qualifier
6 2:00.72 Sabrina Southerland - Auto qualifier, 2nd in heat #3.
7 2:00.88 Madeline Kopp - Finished 5th in heat #1 (2:04.08), eliminated.
11 2:01.06 Kaela Edwards - - Auto qualifier, runnerup in heat #2.
14 2:01.26 Darroneshia Lott - eliminated after finishing 6th (2:04.82) in heat #2.
15 2:01.40 Hanna Green - 3rd auto qualifier in heat #3
Berian leads heat #3. Wow. Murphy may have taken a guy out. Guy in frotn of Muphy went down!!! DQ???
Murphy moves up the last 100 and wins in 1:47.17. Berian led all the way into the final 100 then faded a bit but not as bad as he has all year. Top 6 times all came from this heat.
Replay shows Murphys' right knee taking out the Tech runner.
I definitely would not DQ Murphy. I'd try to place the other guy in the semifnial. Is there a way for them to share lanes?? There should be. I mean if this was Murphy going down, I promise you he would be in the next heat.
Murphy 1:47.17
Lasater 1:47.38
Alvarado - 1:47.46
Ellison 1:47.49
Berian 1:47.84
Tim Hutching has jinxed Berian. Berian fnished 5th in heat #3 and was the #2 time qualifier with one heat remaining as up to that point the top 6 times all came in heat #3. Then Sowinski ran an "extravagant" race (Hutchings words not mine) and pulled the sixth heat to some really fast times.
6th place in heat #4 was 1:47.10 meaning Berian is the first guy out.
anyone find a bootleg stream or something?
I'm all for better streaming options but the fact prelims of the USAs are on a pay per view platform isn't the reason our sport isn't mainstream. I pay per viewed to watch Tiger Woods play golf earlier this year. Granted I could do a one-off payment or monthly payment for it and didn't have to shell out $70. Hard to believe NBC Gold doesn't have a monthly subscription.
And is NCAA XC the ONLY NCAA sport behind a paywall??? The Track regionals were as well. That I think is a joke. All non-revenue NCAA sports should be treated similarly. If parents/fans of gymnastics don't have to pay, then parents/fans of track shouldn't have to pay.
The 1500m qualification seems to be quite tough, only top 3 and 3 fastest to the final
Nonsense. Lack of exposure isn't what's keeping track from being a niche sport. It's imply too difficult to watch for the casual fan. Too many different events, too much nuance. Anyone can easily follow a competition in which two teams are battling head to head. Or a bunch of competitors are trying to best each other over the same competition, like golf. But what casual fan is going to watch the women's steeple and the 800m first rounds and become interested in the sport? it's not particularly good television, the competition is confusing at times (I'm in the middle of trying to explain heats to semis rules to my sister-in-law), and there are too many individuals competing. There's nothing wrong with being a niche sport. Track will always be popular, among those who compete, those who competed when they were younger, those who have family and friends competing.

Ugh--hard to watch, type, and work. I meant lack of exposure isn't what's keeping track a niche sport.
And let's face it: a lot of us like following a niche sport.
Any new pro signings yet? Is Sydney McLaughlin still wearing Kentucky?
Anyone else's stream just the stands?
Based on the start lists it looks like Purrier signed with New Balance.

Yes, per Instagram she joined Coogan's group in Boston.
what happened to Dani Jones? on the live results her name is highlighted yellow. she was 6th in heat 1 in 4:08, maybe she fell and is appealing to get into the final?
