Mile: 5:03 at end of HS freshman year, eventually 4:19
Two Mile: 10:35 at end of HS freshman year, eventually 9:04
Was better at longer stuff but didn't run those events in HS

I had a pretty wild improvement curve my first year. I started with an 8 minute mile with zero training at the beginning of xc, and about 8 months later ran 437 in the mile. A full year of running took my 5k time from 2330ish to 1630ish. My own personal experience showed me that talent really cannot be understated. I was lucky enough to have it.
Improvement in the first year of running is always dramatic and varies depending on your talent and how much you can ramp up your mileage and training. On the latter point, I recommend taking a longer term view of the sport and have a plan to increase training over 5 to 10 years. You'll have fewer injuries and better results.
For myself, I went from being able to jog a few miles slowly to 23-24 minutes for 5k after a few months. After a year I was under 20 minutes. It took another 5 years of consistent training before I was in the low 17s.
