Nope... Mexico simply has to pull a China to begin the US to its knees. . . . China banned purchasing of recyclable materials from the rest of the world. Why is this very important? Because China, and also Mexico, are the primary countries that can afford to take American recyclables and recycle them; American labor is too expensive, but no American wants to a job separating paper by color to recycle, or taking apart old machines to salvage copper and other metals.

Since the ban on buying recyclables started (Jan 1, 2018) US waste recyclers are run out of places to store the materials. Landfills cannot accept the materials because they will overflow very fast. American trash is staying in America, and America is now angry about that. Mexico, and China, will simply laugh at the US as it buries itself in its own wastes.

Current "skilled workers' visa" is a joke, if you're referring to H-1b's. Requirements are that you own a BS degree from some random University. And in reality, there is no way to verify the credentials of each of the 10,000 "universities" in India.

In reality, H-1b's entering the US are not highly skilled but cheap labor from India used for Tata Consulting, Infosys, Techmahindra etc.

A Fee will be charged to each person in USA sending money to Family and Friends in Mexico (Remittance), so people sending money to Mexico will pay for the wall in the long term.

Yeah, this is probably the case...or something similar. The wall is such a stupid thing. It's just a symbol and won't do a thing to keep out anyone who really wants to be here.

If the thing actually gets built, all it will take is a reporter to go show us all what the border looks like, things such as:

1) A part of the wall that is actually a fence.

2) Show the height of the wall and then show a ladder that is as tall or taller.

3) Show a tunnel that has been dug either in the past or after the wall was built.

4) Show "inhospitable" environments that don't have a wall or fence and then have a reporter cross there...it WILL be possible. What, someone who wants to be here will just decide not to cross there because it is hard to do? What about the rivers that they consider to be a barrier? There are dry periods when those rivers really dry up and are easy to cross. The Rio Grande can at times look like a little creek, and it is super easy to cross then.

5) Talk about all the ways illegal immigration happens here...tunnels, hiding in cargo, arriving legally and then overstaying, boat, plane, northern border. Really crazy to talk about a wall doing anything.

Overstaying is the most obvious one. The problem is if you give amnesty to the dreamers parents, then tomorrow there will be 10 million more that are coming over.

The government already has a very good (voluntary) system called e-verify. Make it mandatory for every employer in the US to run their employee's SSN through the system.

If there is no incentive for illegals to come because they can't work - they won't come.

You didn't answer the first part of the question. If the current H-1b is a joke, how do YOU measure the merit?

That's the million $ question. I don't think the Canadian system would work. Millions of Indians would qualify for it and move over in a heartbeat. Even if you make a masters degree the requirement.

I would slightly tweak the H-1b system and instead of a # cap, there would be a salary threshold that needs to be met.

For a special skill worker, employers should be willing to pay $130k + per year. If they don't, they can't be that "special skilled". Adjust that number to inflation each year.

What would change? Less outsourcing, more Top 1% software developers for companies like Facebook, Apple, Google and Amazon.

I think across the board salary threshold ignores regional differences in prevailing wages, as well as industry differences. (Unless you think "skilled" workers exist only in IT.)

What's wrong with the Canadian system? Do they have any serious problem with the current system?

Just heard that Trump now says that he will provide path to citizenship for DREAMERS if deal includes border funding. This is great and who would have thought a Republican of all people would legalize the illegals?

I still don't understand why we're funding a wall if Trump says Mexico will pay for it. Why not lay out the plan for how Mexico is going to pay for it?

Here's what I hear the President saying:

"Give me billions of dollars for a wall. Mexico will pay us back somehow. Believe me."

Here's what he should be saying:

"I have opened up an empty account to fund the wall. Here is how Mexico will pay into that account. As the account gains funds, we will begin building a wall."

What am I missing?

I would stand fast and let everything expire since the Senate will be a Dem majority after November, 2018 this year.

What are you missing? You're missing the fact that Trump lies and gets away with it because a good chunk of the country is too stupid to ask simple questions.

The government is not in the business of breaking up marriages. My understanding is that greencards based on marriage are actually protected by the constitution.

What Trump is trying to change is that the foreign bride is bringing in her mom, dad, sisters, brothers and adult children. Makes sense to me.

Personally I dont think marriage should qualify under a merit based system. I think there is to much potential for fraud.

Funny how the Chapter 11 sleazebucket who ass-raped every business partner and creditor that he ever had is the very last to figure this part out as well. I was fortunate enough to see a whole lot of the Republic of Mexico before that transformation described above took place; congratulations on a very accurate post.

(For the life of me I still haven't figured out how people who scratched a living out of hilly ten acre cornfields can all lay such perfect cinderblock foundations even if they can't even speak English or operate a motor vehicle yet? Most of the construction sites I saw down there back in the day were right out of the Old Testament.)
