ame athlete
utter nonsense
- '68 final with Kiprugut actually only getting silver but essentially solo'ed 1'44.5 at 7,300' off suicidal opening 200 was incredible effort
i'd like ovett or coe to have tried to replicate that
- '76, fantastic virtually solo win in WR
- '84, cruz getting faster & faster thru rounds & 1'43-flat win
- '88, Ereng jogging along until homestretch & then kicked away for win
- '96, rodhal winning in 1'42.5 in wild race
- '12, the still WR !!!
- '16, 1'42.15 back-up !!
all these runs were superior to ovett's run
As far as I know, at the time it was the largest winning margin of any 800m Olympic final in history (and yet off such a slow first lap where all eight were bunched together). Since then I think only 2 or 3 finals have had a greater winning margin
laughable !!!
it was boycott games, thooughly devalued
no Paige who won trials in fantastic effort off 1'44.53 off jog to 600 in miserable weather
he was slower than 1'18.8 at 600 & powered away to destroy james robinson by 1s+
Paige was in 1'42-mid/high shape in trials
there was also no Kenyans, there, notably Maina, who was reigning World Cup 800 champ & zurich-'79 winner & possessor of one of biggest kicks ever seen at the time over 800
ovett was in 1'42-mid/high shape in moscow, no doubt about that
You are full of what comes out of the hole where the sun doesn't shine.
Ovett being in 1'42 mid shape (which I agree with) would be about a second faster than any other man in history aside from Coe, and you're basing that on his performance in that Moscow final.
You really do have quite the ebony fetish to think that Maina was the best 800m runner in the world between 79 and 81.
Why did Paige get nowhere near that kind of form ever again? He didn't have Moscow to aim for so why didn't he prove his point by spending the summer chasing Coe's WR around Europe in 1980?
They were boycott games but balanced by the fact it was in Moscow at the height of the cold war.
