LOL!! What?!?
The main reason why it may not happen is simply the fact that 9 times out of 10 it does not happen. WR attempts requires a lot of things to go well, some of which, the athletes can't control, namely, the weather. With that said, it is rare to have 3 athletes in the same race who are presumably capable of breaking the WR and have gone on the record saying that's the goal. Mutai is about the only athlete whose missing. With 3 athletes so close, I think the record will go down, but I would not be surprised if these guys spend too much time checking each other out and the race ending up being a 2:05.
...maybe it has been said before but as fan of the sport the exciting part is that this will be a race! Whether they run 2hr flat or 2:30. This paints to be a race that time will not matter at the end (of course a WR would be nice to see) but what will unfold during is what is exciting. Can we start calling this the best top three marathoners of all time, racing each other in the same marathon?!
If only Nicky Symmonds was in the race :(

Well, that's entirely the point. It's not a bold claim at all. But 93% here would disagree.
Kipsang fan gets it! A perfect example of what happens when intelligent people actually follow and think about what is said on a thread .
I'm surprised since turtle soup is usually a keen poster

You have been playing with your flagpole too much. How often do world records get easily broken? Even under the best circumstance not very often.
I'm having trouble finding the list, but someone mentioned that Mutai is in the race. Can someone confirm this. If so, I wonder why he's not being talked about.

Truth.
6/5 = worth a punt.

I passed you up in the final mile of the 2002 Las Vegas marathon. How does a 2:11 marathoner run 3:09:35 in perfect weather conditions? Did you get lost?C'mon dude!

Also, probably the only elite Moroccan runner that has never taken drugs.
I'm really hoping they'll all race each other to the end and break it...but what happens around mile 20 when all 3 of them are in the race? They start looking at each other, conserving for a kick and the world record attempt fizzles. Again I hope that's not the case!
Also, why would they want to destroy the record anyway? If these guys were smart hey would break it by a few seconds which would allow them to break it again come spring, and possibly break it again next year in Berlin. Think about the $$$$ bonus each gets for breaking the WR...wouldn't YOU want to get it more than once?

I dont know about the other 2, but the breaking 2 documentary makes it look like kipchoge doesnt give a shit about money. He is already rich and lives like a poor person
when i raced in berlin 93 w/pr 2h11 was windy, experts believe worth 2h8-2h9 ,also i beat on the race 1992 world marathon ranked 1 david tsebe ,befor this race i raced SF marathon 2h20 as hard work out, regarding lasvegas was on vacation 4h drive from where i lived flagstaff az,u want to know more ,i use to go with former boston winer irahim hussein to vegas when there is snow storm,i did the full marathon as practice along high way down hill ,on 2h18 in 1992 it was my best years as well 1993,had nice souvenirs on that part of the world
in eugene
would like to get in touch w/u
as well utahgirl
With Kipchoge it's only 12.5% that something would go wrong. (Lost only 1 out of last 8)
Kipsang can't let it come down to a sprint finish with those other two. Also, if conditions are good, Kipchoge is focused on a solid WR that will solidify his legacy. Bekele seems more likely to be the "spoiler" if the pace dawdles. In any case, it will be a helluva race.

Also, a lot has to come together for a WR (injury-free training, perfect weather and pacing, how the race unfolds, etc. - plus these guys aren't getting younger). Even if they're capable of running 2:01 tomorrow - who knows for sure if they get a shot at breaking even 2:03 after that ever again? So they might as well try to put that record as far out of reach as they can tomorrow.
