I ran 3:13 once, the first time I ran a marathon. It was in 7th grade.
I did not even get a medal, because the age-group was 15-and-under, and they gave only three medals. This was in 1980.

You're ashamed that I'm an American? Why? I have spent my career working in social services and educating people who work with adults with many types of disabilities, etc.
I am also a competitive distance runner who values excellence in the sport. There is a place for inspirational stories, overcoming adversity, etc. But all I ever see in the media is this stuff with people carrying fellow competitors over the line. It does cheapen the sport. To me, finishing the race is inspirational. Helping a fellow competitor is good sportsmanship, but it shouldn't be the most visible story. This wasn't even an effort to help a fellow competitor. It was a split second decision that turned into a viral video clip. But, why have I seen this footage go viral and not Meb's finish in 2014?
The part about "white knight" syndrome is about right. I know it's an inside joke between these two, which is fine. As a woman, I'd be angry and embarrassed to be carried over the line, even if it was as a joke.
My desire to celebrate excellence in the sport has nothing to do with my viewpoint on military service or disability.

Yes the rules state you must run the race and complete it under your own power, even more so on such a stage as Boston.
If you're not competing for prize money, podium spots, a qualifier for another race, or inhibiting any other runners then No. It is a waste of time for officials to even bother taking the time to process a DQ of an athlete not involved in one of the above scenarios.

It's the same as Mike Rossi. In both cases they did not complete the distance. Should you get a finishers medal if you only ran 25 miles of a 26.2 mile race?
Why even run Boston more then once if you don't have a legitimate shot at winning the dam thing? Makes no sense whatsoever to me to keep coming back, spending a shit load of $, just to try and break 3!
That is pretty freaking impressive for that guy to carry an American flag and a woman for 26.2 miles. Most people can't even run that far without carrying anything.

It looks to me like she didn't need to be carried across. Just a little show by the vet. Watching the race on the local Boston channel I saw two other soilders in uniform carry a woman In obvious distress across at 3:04 pm or so. Should have been dq'ed
In HS races you can now aid a runner in a show of sportsmanship. So you can literally drag your teammate accross the line.
Is it a DQ for elites winning money. Yes.
But at what point do you say who cares?
I say 2:40 male, 3:00 female. You cheat slower than that who gives a flying f***.
