They develop knee, ankle and foot problems so the cart is needed as they cannot do too much walking. I don't blame them, they may have some health problems that caused the weight gain.

A lot of it is obesity-related joint problems. And if they're middle-aged there will be age-related joint degenerative changes that will be exacerbated by the weight gain. These people need non-weightbearing excercise to get the weight down before trying to walk at the stores. A lot of these people who won't or can't lose weight end up having joint replacement surgeries.
And similarly, why are overweight (of a certain race) passengers the only ones getting golf cart rides in the airports?
The cruelty on this thread is surpassed only by ignorance. Part of the obesity problem in this country (and the medical profession) is the conclusions jumped to about obese people.
I am morbidly obese and do not enjoy being this way. I don't eat until I can explode, but exercise and mobility is a problem for me which is what has led to my obesity as I have aged.
I have broken and rehealed C4 and T3 vertebrae. These were undetected and ignored by doctors when the injuries first occured, because when I complained of the pains the doctor told me losing weight would stop the pain. So the bones healed themselves but not correctly, and so 30 years later and I have chronic neck and back pain. As if that wasn't bad enough, I need 2 total knee replacements. My orthopedist wants me to lose weight before doing the operations because I am young and excessive weight is rough on the hardware. He doesn't want me to walk as exercise because the impact on my knees, which have no cartilage, would make the knees worse. It is a catch 22.
It continues to amaze me how discrimination against race, creed, sexual identity, visible handicap and ethnicity are all politically incorrect, but discrimination and bigotry against obesity is still considered socially acceptable. People look at me with disdain and disgust. They can't wait to get around me while walking or shopping with a motorized cart, because my ambling is an inconvenience to them. It is socially acceptable to assume that obesity occurs because of gluttony or sloth. I live alone. I have to do my own shopping, cleaning, etc. It used to take me a day to complete my errands, now it takes me a week. Between my spine and knee problems, standing/walking through a huge supermarket, loading and unloading the car, then carrying the groceries through the parking lot to my apartment is so hard on me, it takes two days to recover and be able to do the smallest of tasks.
I'm so glad you are all healthy enough to be able to judge and condemn those of us who are less fortunate. Just pray you don't ever have to suffer the chronic pain that will prohibit you from your running and walking. It's so easy to be smug. What excuse is there for any of you and your lack of compassion? Shall I judge you for the self-centered, egocentric, heartless individuals you all seem to be?
And my knee problems are not obesity-related. I had been diagnosed in my very active 20s with this issue, and an orthopedist told me it was genetic. I could be a 90 lb gymnast and have this knee problem. So for those of you who feign sympathy because of "obesity-related" health problems, think again. My obesity is a result of, not a cause of, my health issues.
Sorry to hear about your condition, Sali.
I seriously doubt the dozen or so I see in every Walmart I've ever been to, though, are in a similar boat. "People" is a general term, not "this person."
Were you searching for an old thread that you could comment on? This thing is 4 years old!
Well said broken arrow.
Sali- Please understand that there are many heartless and ignorant people who are members of Lets Run.
