It's not a school event and Nike prohibits use of school name, requires registration as a club. Intended to comply with some state association rules on out of season competition.
Yes, a soccer player could join the club as long as she goes to the same HS and is on track to graduate.
No they don't prohibit it. My team used our school name. Auburn, going to nationals this year from NY goes to Auburn High School.
Many schools are simply the name of the town(s) that the school is located in.
It's NOT an official high school event. The coach can't use school time to take time off to travel with the team- they have to use personal time if they're a school employee.
Some states are more strict- I think Illinois at least used to prevent the coach from even going to nationals or any non-sanctioned event. But in NY coaches take kids to road races in the preseason (they just can't wear school uniforms or use school vehicles and drivers to transport them unless they have proof that they paid themselves.
This is pretty spot on. I'm from Illinois and when I went to NXN Nike basically said, "hey we're calling your team xyz, is that okay?" We said "sure", but no idea if we could've changed it or anything. I'm assuming there are lots of other schools that fall into this category.
You're correct, in IL coaches are not allowed to attend, even if they use their own personal time/money. FWIW I know some coaches don't follow this rule and just so happen to appear at the race, but it's against the rules.
Interestingly Illinois has no restriction in terms of the gear/apparel/all of that. I remember when I went the teams from Indiana had to choose whether they wanted to keep the backpack or the sweatshirts or the other gear. I think they were limited to like $80 worth of gear or something. Then there are the teams from other states that somehow walk away with multiple singlets and multiple pairs of spikes.
Hey all, resurrecting this thread. I'm curious. I'm sure some teams are just using a club name without any separate organization. Do any of you know whether teams set up a separate entity that has a separate bank account/budget? Otherwise, it would seem to me that the coaches racing these teams under another name could risk assuming a fair bit individual liability...since I'm assuming if push came to shove, their school districts wouldn't cover anything. But I'm new to this whole game...
