XC races take a lot out of these kids, and they at times react very emotionally. It is not just girls however—girls are conditioned by society that showing emotion is OK, whereas boys are conditioned to keep it inside. Walk around any XC meet and you'll find plenty of boys in a corner somewhere nearly passed out or even crying. Look at the photos from NXN Regionals if you don't believe me: the photographers caught some great examples of this, which I don't think is very fair to the athletes involved but it does prove the point.
Crying in the corner after a race?

Nothing wrong with a good cry, as long as its done away from teammates, and is used to settle your emotions before going back out there and being a good teammate.
Say for example, you trained super hard for four years to qualify for the state track meet your senior year, and in the end you get passed for the final spot and fail.
In that case, if you go and cry for a little, regain control of your crushing disappointment and channel that into rage, you'll be back and ready to run on pure hate for 4x800.
Running is an emotional and painful sport. Crying happens for some people. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you don't do a lot of it around teammates and don't bring the team vibe down.
