If anyone was hurt by the waterfall start it was Sowinski, who had to run the whole first turn in lane 3 or 4. Not to say that he would have made the team if they'd started in lanes, but it certainly helps explain why he faded so much in the final 100 -- a bit of a disadvantage having to run ~5-10m further than almost everyone else in the field.

#1-6 were on the inside group, and #7-9 were on the outside stagger. Sowinski was #6, the furthest-out guy on the inside group, probably in lane 3 or 4 (since the first 5 guys take up 2 or 3 lanes), as geometry matters suggested. So he may have run a few extra meters, from being on the outside of a waterfall start.
On the other hand, the waterfall lines are curved, which may make up for any disadvantage of this kind -- if you run a tangent directly for the rail on the inside of the curve, it may be that this distance is the same for every point on the curved starting line, in which case Sowinski ran the same distance as everyone else.
Is anyone familiar enough with track measuring and marking to comment on this?
