They need to add a Rupp mask to complete the outfit.

Based on the photo of Cain, I'd guess it is for motion tracking purposes.
Yeah this is probably it. Those tapings are not standard kinesiotaping patterns for injury. They don't even run the full length of a muscle. An injury taping looks something more like this:
http://munfitnessblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/blue-and-pink-kinesio-tape-on-shirtless-body.jpgFollowing the length of a muscle or tendon the whole way.
There's probably some guy at Nike who wrote an app to do "kinematic analysis" in the field with a smartphone. Uses computer vision to track the tape lines and extrapolate on what the joints are doing. That'd explain why some of the other athletes had these tape patterns too.
This is just like when Salazar used grainy TV footage from an oblique angle to do "gait analysis" on Bekele, then tried to force Galen to run the same way. All bollocks of course...you can't do that kind of stuff with any accuracy using anything but a full 3D kinematics lab.
The use of tape is an acceptable way to hide the evidence of a recent tattooing adventure.
covers track marks
Looking at the picture, my first thought was that it was for motion tracking. However, it'd be very difficult to do any kind of point-tracking with those long bands. If there was a small white circle in the band, that'd work. Anyone know of a motion tracking system that doesn't use points, but lines for the long bones? KT tape has negligible benefits during running and probably less so for racing. As someone pointed out the tape placement doesn't fit any of the traditional application methods used. What else could AlSal be trying to accomplish with this?
they're just trying to stand out so suckers like you lame asses will dissect and discuss such a trivial part of their race, propelling them into the limelight.
It might be some angle for keeping muscles loose and warmer for cool conditions, without having to wear a thermal layer.
what ever the reason.....she is still running rather slow. come on Mary Cain, get it going!!!!

The tape is worth 2 seconds
per lap
--> 4:05
which is faster than Simpson
Maybe AlSal is looking to dump some Ktape stock.
Track marks actually run along inside elbows and lower arms, mostly. Until they graduate to legs, thighs, feet, toes, and other, ummm, last-chance appendages.
Alberto has been trying to figure out some way to get Galen Rupp to run like Kenenisa Bekele for many years now and has tried an almost infinite number of strategies to attain this goal.
Unfortunately... this is an impossible goal for Alberto to ever attain.
Also Alberto could save a lot of Nike money by just using duct tape. That is what I would use if I was that stupid. It also comes in a black color if you like black. I prefer the gray (grey) color.

At first I thought it was another of Salazar's ideas (and it could have been) but I also saw Omar McLeod and Aries Merritt wearing tape in the same spots during men's 110 hurdles. My theory (with zero inside knowledge) is that they were using the tape because of the cold temps, maybe to keep muscles warm/loose?
I don't know enough about science or physiology to tell you whether that makes sense or not though.
1) Your first sentence might be true.
2) Your second sentence is not true.
3) Your third sentence is absolutely true.

Conspiracy " theory"? Is your implication? That they are intended to conceal needle track marks and or skin coloration by " massage cream' ?
Hoo hoo !

Some in-house software, I'm sure. Probably not up to snuff....
Tell me about Cain, why does she wear the tape?
If it's for tracking purposes, why would it be essential to do it in a race? Can't they just do it at practice? They do plenty of race-pace stuff in practice, and it's probably easier to set up the tracking equipment there. Plus, then they don't have to deal with looking bizarre in front of a bunch of fans.
Well, what is a slow 1500m time for you?
