The NHL teams make money on TV revenue, ticket and merchandise sales and where they own their own building or have a favourable lease agreement, they can make money off other events, parking, concession et al.

As the US population is 10x as big, the US has more teams. The odds are you will be playing in the US at some point in your career or even for your whole career - over 60% of players are from Canada and I think nearly 80% if you include the farm teams in the AHL.
Lacrosse and hockey are Canada's two official sports, summer and winter. Both invented in Canada as was basketball.
