I know some of you like to toss around the term "PC," but what does anything she said have to do with PC?
I'm an old white man who pretty much agrees with her. And think of Rowbury's and Simpson's efforts to get under 4:00 for the 1500. Sort of meaningful to women.

Because in typical liberal divisive tactic, she makes it about racism/sexism/bigotry when it isn't. Someone might as well blame it on global warming next.
Reid wrote, "While the mile might be significant for men (sub-4) there is no such significance for women. This isn't marketability it's male nostalgia."
1) I think the tweet is absurd. Somehow trying to make this sexist. The 4 minute mile is a very famous barrier in sports - maybe the most famous. It has nothing to do with sex.
2) I disagree with the assertion that a mile means nothing for a woman. People in America relate to minutes per mile. When the run a 5k or 5 miler, they don't have splits ever 1500. They have splits ever mile. Oh I run at 8:30 mile pace. No one says, I run at 8:10 1500 pace. So even if a woman runs a 4:30 mile, it's easier for the average person on the street to relate to that than it is to relate to a 4:10 1500.
3) A 4:00 1500 is a more marketable story for a woman than 4:20 mile - maybe. I'm fine if the women want to stay at 1500 but please don't make this be the result of some sexist plot.

The mile is a novelty event. That's why they don't run it in the Olympics.
But that wasn't her point, as evidenced by her writing:
"This isn't marketability it's male nostalgia."

"old, white dudes are draining my energy rn"
Her point was "fvck men" and "fvck old white men".
Great post. It amazes me how it's ok to hate on white men. Can you imagine if she said "young black dudes are draining my energy." She'd probably loser her sponsorship in 5 minutes.
We have "white privlege." Can you imagine if whites marched and complaiend about "black angriness."

Exactly. It is a joke for College runners. Reid is right, the female "standard" is the 4 minute 1500m, they have no history for the mile - without looking it up, most people would not even know the women's WR for the mile.
The answer is so simple, however. Let the women keep their 1500m - Barringer is the only Collegiate to have broken 4 minutes - and let the men have their mile. As Reid states, this thread is typical of the mysogynistic attitude promoted by the Brojo's (Rojo you are the worst, feel sorry for your wife - the really pathetic part is that you don't even realize it, in fact would likely pretend, and defend that pretense vigorously, that you aren't), that don't even value the input of women. If you asked the Collegiate women, they would overwhelmingly prefer the 1500m - that is what she means by the old white men. It is a paternalistic attitude that "we" (the men) know what is best for women. Typical BS, maybe Caitlyn Jenner is right, men are pigs.
Sheila, say it ain't so.
But for those who replied to her, Admiral Ackbar: "It's a traaaap!". Regardless, I'll bite.
The mile is an imperial distance that happens to have an extremely difficult yet doable racing time that rounds to a beautiful number like 4 for men; it just happened to work out that way - no conspiricy or patriarch at play here... Unfortunately, at best, there's no need to make this into anything greater than that and, yet, at worst there seems to be a general societal movement afoot to destroy and erase any and all artifacts of our collective history because a ridiculous minority of people can abstract a level of offense, insult, or oppression from them.
Despite what the overpaid ivory tower liberal professors and researchers have brainwashed you into believing, this is one of most dangerous mentalities in the world.
You can call Trump a nazi or fact or Hitler for reasons that are beyond the reasonable but the ideas behind the beliefs that would drive someone to remove the mile distance on grounds of some perverted liberal belief of gender oppression is the ignition to the engine of societal genocide.
No female in the NCAA has ever broken 4 minutes so that's a worthless barrier in this discussion.

The politically correct SJW script is "fvck white people" and "fvck men", among other things. Blame them for as much as you can. Attribute disagreement with others to these people belonging to one or more of the aforementioned categories. Then use said membership as a reason to discredit their claims.

Ugh. One of the very MOST annoying thing about the current "oppression warriors" is their half-smirking use of black ghetto language and culture. Blacks don't call them on this usage as long as they have a common enemy: ol' whitey (males only..er, usually).
I also find it hilarious when lily-white women seek solidarity and praise from minority "oppression warriors" by joining them in the attack on white males. It's like Sheila is expecting a "you go, girl" after a little snippy tweet.
I wonder what her old white parents think of folks like her.

Wrong; that is exactly what it's about, and why you're trying to obscure the issue.

I'll venture a solution that will no doubt get me called all manners of nasty names: the mile is not a even, clean number (1609m) so why not come up with a distance under 1500m, say 1470m, that would create an adequately difficult distance for women to attempt sub four minute effort. Go through history and calculate a distance that would create a proportional amount of sub women as there are sub four men with a participation factor included. Call it the "women's track mile" or something better.
Instead of destroying what men have, try creating something for women. Granted, I'm sure people that don't exist in reality will have something pissy to say about that too.
The idea of going to 1500m on gender-based time issues is crazy. It's a "I can't have it so you can't either" attitude.
I hope Sheila well when I don't have a horse in the race but this attitude is so bigoted and leaves me less of a fan.

She isn't "telling the truth." She made a claim and it is wrong for the reasons I and others have stated.
If you have an actual argument as to why I'm wrong, let me know.
"This isn't marketability it's male nostalgia."
My response to this is not an acceptance of the premise but what's wrong with male nostalgia? And why can't it be marketed to?
Yeah, I'm white, I like the mile distance, keep it.
Mansplaining...
I'm Canadian and Sheila's comments make her look like an idiot.
Good old social media... giving everybody a voice, regardless of their intelligence, or lack thereof.
No it isn't.
The majority of college distance athletes never run under 4 minutes in the mile.
No, she isn't right.
Women have plenty of history in the mile.
Further, the "standard" you mention is one that most professional athletes never break, never mind college athletes.
Irrelevant comment.
Most people wouldn't be able to tell you the men's world record for the mile without looking it up either.
The discussion is about the popularity of the mile, not most people's ability to say the mile WR without looking it up.
Many, if not most, would agree that men & women should run the same events. To have people run different distances based on sex is discrimination, and something that is already being challenged, as in the case of HS cross country.
"You're sexist. You don't even realize it. I bet you'll even try to disagree with me."
Classic.
An argument's soundness has no relation to the sex of the person making the argument.
Arguments stand on their merit.
And how would you know this? Have you gone around asking hundreds of college women? I'd like to see the data you drew this conclusion from.
On the other hand, Sports Illustrated writer Chris Chavez put up a poll asking what people would rather see, the mile or the 1500. As of now 849 people have voted. The mile is winning with 58% of the vote. The 1500 has 42%.
https://twitter.com/ChrisChavezSI/status/677921206046212098Again, what does being white have to do with what event women would prefer to run?
Answer, again - nothing.
It's just part of the "fvck white people" & "fvck men" narrative.
This decision affects both men and women.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the social justice warrior.
Sheila Reid now confirmed as a nutjob.
Exactly. What twitter needs is debate judges who reject illogical arguments.
Next step. Equal XC distances!
A better statement is the fact that keeping the XC distances unequal is the result of nostalgia.
