I'm sure you are interested in your collection of Ken Dolls. You likely play Prison Showers with them all day long.

Like most people my age, I love the original movies and hate the prequels. I agree with an earlier poster- the prequels are not borderline anything - they are terrible movies.
I think JJ Abrams will make a good move - good but not great. They should've hired Joss Wheedon to do the movie. Firefly and Serenity had the same sort of feel and emotional connection as Star Wars and I think he would've made an awesome movie.

Why do we think this new Star Wars movie will not be anything more than a run of the mill superhero/sci fi movie?
The problem I have is George Lucas not being involved. Yeah I know Lucas' directing of actors and his dialogue was a borderline disaster in Star Wars 1-3. But Lucas really was a genius visually. That, along with the framework of the story Lucas created in the 70s, is what made Star Wars iconic. But it seems to me that is virtually all gone with this new movie.
JJ Abrams is fine. He is why I don't think it will be a bad movie. But Star Wars is Lucas' vision. Its like some other writer coming out with a new installment of Harry Potter books. Would you really take that seriously?
Am I being overly skeptical or negative?
pass performance is the best indicator of future success.
To themanontherun,
Next time we see each other, let's talk some Star Wars.
From the link you provided:"The fact that a real-life puppet of BB-8 exists doesn't mean that the droid will be entirely CGI-free in the movie. It's likely the puppet acted as a useful stand-in for shooting, and will be enhanced or even replaced in post-production."

Apparently, your eye cannot.

Why are you discounting the importance of a strong running game?

LOLOLOLOLOL wow amazing trolling, you really showed that one guy. Got us good, bud.
I actually disagree on Episodes 1-3. Or at least its a bit more nuanced. The writing, casting and directing of the actors was an utter disaster. I'll give you that. But Star Wars 1-3 were visually very creative and stunning. If you were to watch it as a silent movie - that is just subtitles to follow the story. But still hear the music, I think you would see it as very well done movies. And again, the basic framework of the story of Star Wars 1-3 were good. Its just when the dialogue started all hell broke loose. You are reading way too much into Harrison Ford. Ford has been in plenty of mediocre movies. Also, there was no role for him in the stories of SW1-3. I buy that he didn't like to be directed by Lucas and likes working with Abrams better. But otherwise I see it as him doing his career as an actor and he's taking one more job.

1) OP is not being overly skeptical or negative. Episodes 1 - 3 were absolute disasters, no borderline about it.
But
2) Harrison Ford is in this one.
That is significant NOT because of how his performance may carry Episode 7 (it won't).
The reason that this is significant is that he has no real reason to do this. He has plenty of money. And actors always want to distance themselves from repetitive roles (Han Solo, James Bond, Jason Bourne...). So why would he come back if he did not think that this movie would be good?
Some of the others (Leia, Luke...) aren't that accomplished so this is an opportunity for them. But Ford is very accomplished, has already established a strong legacy outside of Star Wars, and has tons of other opportunities out there for him. So I don't think he would agree to be in it if he did not think it would be good.
Conclusion: There is hope.
What? That is not really true. You may have a point about Empire Strikes back where Lucas hired a director. (forget his name). But that's just it. Empire is widely seen as the best movie because you had the synergy of a director who was very good at directing the actors (something Lucas was terrible at) while Lucas dealt with everything else. I think that is what people are expecting in this movie. I don' t think Star Wars fans fully appreciate Lucas not being involved in this movie at all. Generally Lucas was both famous and infamous for wanting everything done his way in the Star Wars movies. Actually in the original Star Wars nobody knew what Lucas was trying to do so it had to be that way.

Star Wars 4-6 were not Lucas alone, he had a lot of collaborators. The prequel trilogy, Lucas didn't take much input from anyone else, you can say what was on screen was pretty much Lucas' sole vision of what those movie should be.
So, I'm okay with a basic Lucas non-involvement in the franchise at this point.

Vader is born a slave and embarks on a long quest for freedom, only to find at each step that he has merely changed masters. Whenever he gains power he finds himself further enslaved. To illustrate this dual role he ends up part machine.
General Grievous, same way but more machine than living. And Luke gets a machine hand after finding out he doesn't control his own destiny.
Did Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead help with the music for this like he did for the original?
