He was on the same drugs as Rupp, which will be soon banned because they the are PEDs.

Drug cheats in other sports, notably body building which requires competitors to be extremely lean, use hormone therapy drugs to shed body fat and recover from hard workouts.
BK was a great runner. I don't believe he was on HR therapy when he won the NCAA XCs as a frosh.
Anyhow, he had low tonus (muscle tone) which is NOT an indicator of fitness. Primarily genetically determined. He probably had a low % of body fat, just low muscle tone. Low muscle tone also helps increase range of motion, or conversely high muscle tone can decrease range of motion.
I'm guessing he just had a huge engine, and was incredibly mechanically efficient.
Brenda Martinez also seem to have low tonus. Doesn't seem to slow her down
I never realized why I have always thought Brenda Martinez was so hot, but you just nailed it. She is ridiculously fit but still looks like a woman. High-tonus women are a turnoff for me personally. I don't like all of the muscle and sinew. I know that a lot of you like it. I can respect the way it looks, I just don't prefer it on women that I fancy.

I have always thought BK had an exceptional range of motion in his hips, almost like they were on a greased track that other Americans in the same race did not display.
Your second point seems very obvious, the engine must be big.
Your third point goes hand-in-hand with #1.
Astute observations in my eyes.
BK running 4:05 1600m to win the state meet as a senior in high school. Not scrawny, certainly.
How amazing is it to with NCAA XC as a true frosh?! That's probably his second greatest achievement, after the sub-13:00 5000m.

I don't care much for muscle, but I LOVE sinew!
Wow, 4:05 with wind (heat?) and by himself last 800, negative split. Clearly on par with the sub-4 kids we have now.

The top American distance runner for three consecutive generations was on hormone therapy:
Alberto Salazar
Bob Kennedy
Galen Rupp
Not a coincidence! Clearly evidence of the need to use synthetic hormones to recover from the training to reach that level.
All I know is that the real American record for the 5000 is 12:58.21
Kennedy was on hormone drugs. Ritz ran faster clean.

A google image search for "bob kennedy athlete" pulls up this picture:

http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=5930065On thing I would say about looking at pictures of Bob Kennedy and comparing them to athletes now:
1) Training has changed since then a bit. A lot more emphasis tends to be on lifting (compared to late 80s, early 90s anyway) and nutrition. This seems to have had a very tiny increase in performance, but a bit more significant increase in how cut most of the athletes of today appear.
2) The clothing Bob Kennedy usually wore (and that most runners of the era wore) wasn't very flattering, it made most athletes look shapeless. It reminds me of these shorts (http://www.physiquebodywareusa.com/Images/Large_Images/womens_running_short.jpg) that are currently trendy with some women runners. They look like diapers, it is weird.

What about Chris Solinsky's 5k pr of 12:55.53?
Who in his prime was ~20lbs heavier than BK
http://www.spashtrack.com/SolinskyC.jpgJust imagine how fast Kennedy could have been if he hadn't been such a lazy fvck coasting along on talent and thyroid meds. Jeez, put down the cake and lift some freaking weights.
Skinny fat is the new trend, haven't you'll heard. You can't synthesize natural epo when in a calorie deficit. So get your skinny assesss off the couch and eat a cheese burger.

Look at the guy. Roids for sure. Just like Dieter Baumann.
