Front page of sports is a huge pic of the "photo finish" for the mens open race. "won by a torso" - casual fans and folks in ATL who know nothing of running but the Peachtree understand one guy edged out another guy, and they might not understand why track looks at the lean vs the chip time, but it takes one sentence that in close finishes, these are the rules.... plus it makes for a great photograph.
The Peachtree cup story is buried far inside the sports section, and they have to devote a couple of paragraphs to explaining the third/fourth place women are the reason the US team didn't win.... I got bored and confused reading it, no way any casual fan followed it.
I suppose the story of the British Olympian vs the US military elite... better for local fans than two elite Kenyans they probably never heard of, and the interviews were certainly deeper... if the track club wants to ditch the "Kenyans win this thing" that is their choice. Last year making it a domestic focused field was probably good if their focus is exciting the ATL market. Heck, do US only, and regional only prize money. It devalues the international caliber of the field, but that is a theoretical choice.
Basically, ATC wants to be the NYRR, and they're taking strides to be there - certainly the prices of their races are heading that direction... difference is, NYRR still invites Kenyans to the NYC Marathon.
