He looked lean and pretty smooth out there. I think he's closer than we think.

I have seen him in Flagstaff over the last few years and the last time I saw him a few weeks ago he looked as fit as I have ever seen him. Just strong, healthy and doing well. Not lean and gaunt.
I heard from a reliable source that he is aiming for the marathon WR in the spring. His training has been going better than ever.
Didn't Khannouchi used to run relatively slow Halfs before his fast marathons? Some people are just better marathoners- can run double their Half times in marathon buildups.

Nice race for Hall.
You're unclear on the concept of champion, as the dictionary says, a champion is:
"a person who has defeated or surpassed all rivals in a competition, especially in sports.".
A 64 half bites. Dylan Wykes ran 2012 Phoenix solo in 62:38, his marathon PB is 2:10. Hall has a long way to go.
Reread my post. This was a good race because he competed down to the finish. Not a DNS, DNF, or DFL.
I reread it, sorry, 64 still bites. If he was competitive he would have won.
I also do the following, "Starts, finishes, and COMPETES. " but don't consider myself a champion.
All that being said, DNS/F is a step up for Ryan, must be all that butter in his coffee.

Hall beat Wykes by roughly 75 seconds on Sunday
That 2:04 was at least 3-4 mins wind aided. Low 64 for Hall is better than he has run. Maybe a 62 high next time out.

1:04's back to the norm for Hall. He's run many of those. Doesn't he think that getting his speed back is important? As an experienced marathoner, Hall at 59:43 again would be a non-aided 2:03-4 marathoner. I don't think that will ever happen again, unfortunately.
He was running this as a marathon pace training run. As was Amy Hastings, the female winner.

since when do you have to win a race to be considered "competitive"?
you would think competing at all makes one competitive.
but what do i know
i'm just a bill

When i make a typo, that's when!
It should say "Champion", as the poster implied Hall was a Champion for coming in second. I really hope Hall get's a "Champion" finisher medal, which i admit will look nicer than a DNF/S medal.
Thanks, Wykes, by many accounts, is not in Hall's league, that's the partly the point. Wykes has been battling multiple injuries last 2 years, and coming off of a stress fracture from late last year. After Boston, Hall claims he is a 2:04 marathoner, compared to Wykes 2:10. Given all that, 75 seconds up on Wykes is not so impressive.

it still does, but one second slower than the winner means he lost in the final 100m and that it might have been a tactical race. For all we know, that could be his current limit or they both could have gone faster than 64
I do not know what Ryan Hall has been training lately, but don't forget this:
Before his 2:08 in Boston 2010 he ran the same time (64:low). And before his 2:04 he ran 63:high 3 or 4 weeks out. Don't count him out. If he's healthy - he will be ready.

As the other posted said, clearly Ryan Hall ran a 64 minute half as a training run. Just like he ran a 64 minutes half as a training run before running Boston in 2010. Don't you people understand that pros don't go all out in all races? You get an appearance fee, and do the race as part of training. Fast, yes. But all out? No.
Hopefully he said he was running it at his marathon pace and taking it easy.
remember hall closing marathons in 1:02 in central park,
