Chris Barnicle is still harboring resentment to the nurse practioneer who misdiagnosed his (and Cormier's) mono? Really...after 10 years? Loser!

Not a loser at all.
Time is the only resource you cannot get back.
For runners, especially high level ones, the window is so short. Time is everything. You only realize this if you run/ran/trained at a high level.
It is interesting how the dedication and drive that makes someone a great athlete often times is accompanied by a lack of self-awareness and objectivity that is needed to sustain a career in athletics. I was reading about Tracy McGrady the other day. He claims to be injury free and feeling better than ever at 35 after finally being cut from the NBA. I wonder whether he would have had a bigger and longer career had he been able to be honest with his health and really given himself time to heal instead of always playing with pain. Same for Cormier. His drive to excel just eclipsed any objectivity he could have had about his health. I bet if he fully recovered from the bout of mono, he would be right up there with Galen Rupp right now. I think his "fog" was more his inability to see the bigger picture in athletics than wanting to do other things in life.

But 10 years later to still resent the nurse practioneer? Does it benefit you to do so? If some girlfriend dumped you 20 years ago, are you still going to harbor resentment 20 years later? It does no good. You drop it and forget about it. Voila!
I am surprised his coach, Steve Lurie ( RIP) was not mentioned in the article.

I'd probably be bothered by it 10 years later as well. But regardless, to me, the most surprising thing in that article was that it took so long for them to get tested for mono. Seriously, HIV and cancer tests before a mono test? Along with anemia, mono is probably the most obvious diagnosis.
Thanks for the article. It as a good read.

I do get where you are coming from but this nurse practioneer made a huge error. Mono is the first thing you test for followed by aenima. Huge mistake that just wasted 2 top athletes time.
I was misdiagnosed while in college too so maybe I can understand the frustration a little better.
to be fair, he was barely out of his teens, or perhaps even still a teenager, but still should have known to ask for that. if she refused, go pay for it yourself, $50 is not going to kill a kid to find out, especially if it's that important. yes, who knew it *was* that important, but most runners are familiar with mono, stress fractures, anemia, etc., so i can also place a small portion of the blame on chris directly- though, if he was high all the time, perhaps his brain wasn't quite there, which seems to be his general look in most pictures I've seen, lol
I applaud the writer for all of his work on this story. You provided a lot of insight and did a great job tracking everybody down. Bravo.
From a journalistic standpoint, I do have a few suggestions/constructive criticisms:
1) You definitely shouldn't have named the nurse practitioner. You're making her sound incompetent (and not giving any attribution to the conclusions you're making, but that's another issue) and possibly setting Letsrun up for legal trouble by saying she made a misdiagnosis. Medical professionals are forbidden by law from commenting on patient information unless they receive permission from the patient or, if deceased, their family. There's no indication Cormier or Barnicle were in contact with Harper to tell her about the story, so it's no wonder she didn't get back to you. If they did, I stand corrected.
2) The story was way too long. You had great details, but not all of them were needed.
3) The focus of the story was basically "What ever happened to Kenny Cormier?" but after speculating on it briefly in the introduction, you jump into biography mode. The most interesting stuff began when he left college. You should have put that up higher, right after the introduction, then weaved the details of his high school and brief college career into the rest of the story (or just not spent so much time on them, as referenced in suggestion #2).
4) Be careful with the editorializing. You say he's among a group of prodigies "that never made it," and speculate about where he could be working. I could see Cormier taking issue with that, but now I'm speculating and that's what I just warned you about.
Ultimately, I really did find this to be an informative story. As a longtime runner and Letsrun visitor, it's good to see someone doing in-depth reporting. Keep it up. But it's for that very reason that I offer these suggestions. I hope they help you in the future.
Regards.

Thanks for taking the time for the constructive criticism.
I, as the editor, have removed the name of the nurse practioner. To be honest, when I first read it,I asked "Why do we have her name in there? What does it add?" I wanted to see what Weldon thought about it and left it in but now have just removed it.
As our note says, her name adds little to the story and medical privacy laws could make it hard for her to respond.

Well, using the term "tard" sets the threshold for your IQ at a high of 50; which explains the complete and utter stupidity of your entire post. Being paid money to protect corporate interests provides protection and freedom? The depth of your stupidity makes the Mariana Trench look like a wadding pool in comparison.
And guess what, I did think the guy you were replying to was offensive, but then you have to wade in and make him look like a genius.
great article! that guy is hard core. watch out what you write on these boards!
Holy shit! Courier was in WW2? Awesome runner. Awesome patriot.

I thought it was great and hate the way the internet is ruining long-form journalism. The details make it engrossing. Thanks for the writeup letsrun!

Written like the "Tard" you truly are.
Stay stupid and ungrateful libtard. It suits you very well.
"Libtard" - hahaha, that's a good one!! It's like you combined "liberal" and "retard" into one word!! Right? Hahaha! Well done!!! Good job coming up with that new phrase all by yourself, because I sure hate it when people use stupid, worn-out phrases invented by others.
Ken - if you're reading this filth, don't pay attention to these libtards. They should be thanking you for protecting their freedom. Thanks Kenny!! Now get out there and kill some Afghanis!!!! HUAH!!

thanks to all who've hijacked the thread, now back on topic.
Well now the hijacks, ie. truthful reports about Cormier from this morning, have vanished, and we're left with the drivel like below.
[quotewow letsrun, amazing read, great to see Ken doing so well. also great to see someone doing something outside of teh sport and making an identity not solely tied to running. Bravo Ken, good on you lad.[/quote]
