You get 70 minutes per day for moderate to strenuous exercise. Not sure if this includes shower time. Say it does. Do a 7 mile run, some push ups and abs, then shower quickly. Bam. Workout every day.

Sweet! I would run 4 miles, then go back to bed and spread my exercise throughout the day.
70 mins a day is enough to run 9 miles and get a (very) quick shower. Could I spend the whole time reading? Do I have to just lay there?
It might not be so bad if I could use a computer and read. I assume you have to get up to eat too, no?
Suzy Favor Hamilton could make a lot more than $18,000 by staying in bed for 70 days.
There was a Reddit AMA with a guy who was in the study. It's worth a read it you are interested.

Can I masturbate?
I was about to mention reading the Reddit AMA a few weeks ago. I think I recall that the bed was tilted so that his head was always lower than his body. I would go absolutely nuts!

Agreed. They're just taking advantage of unemployed people that need the money. It should be at least 20 times that amount or more.
Who cares, it is a job offer, if you were dead broke and looking for a job and on the streets, sitting in a bed being fed sounds awesome. However I am a distance runner at a prestigious college I have things to do.
Yep, it should be much more than this as this can cause bad health problems down the line. But is this any different than being in a full body cast after a bad motor bike or bicycle accident?

Your muscles may never be the same again.
There's more than just a little atrophy associated with not moving from a bed for 70 days. I would bet a lot of money that any runner who does this never runs within 10 seconds / mile of their PRs again.
I have a unique perspective on this. Two years ago I shattered both of my heels (calcaneus) in a pretty nasty ski wreck. Between the original insult, time spent in hospital, and post surgical recovery I was non weight bearing and bed ridden for just under 8 weeks. Granted I could crawl, but normal exercise was for all intents and purposes not happening. Long story short, I just pr'd in the marathon with a 2:42. While the atrophy is for lack of a better word "intense" the biggest issue inhibiting recovery was metabolism and energy level. You are correct in assuming that your muscles will never be the same, as the atrophy leaves you basically starting from scratch. It would require a large amount of effort just to be "normal" again after 70 days in bed let alone performing. My best guess is 6-12 months before a normal running workload could even be attempted. From where I sit, 18k is not worth the amount of effort required to recover from this. Anyone seriously considering this needs psychiatric help. That being said recovery from being bed ridden to pr shape is not impossible, just hope your pr's suck as bad as mine.
I just got to the second round in the interview process!!
