I think Kipsang and 3rd place Gebremariam are both 6ft plus - gives hope to taller runners succeeding in the marathon (Rupp, etc).

In races my son almost always looks back when he is leading/winning.
So I played and replayed the end of this race to show him how the pros do it. After Kipsang went at the end, he didn't look back. Not once.
My son said, "well how did he know where Desisa was?"
I said it doesn't matter. Because when Kipsang went, he went all out. it didn't matter to Kipsang if Desisa was dropped, right behind him or going to beat him. Kipsang was going to give 100% of what he had from there until the finish. That's how you finish a race, something that even pros mess up sometimes
what was that? wrote:

Kipsang is 6 feet tall.

I believe that Meb discussed looking back after his boston victory and was in favor of looking back.
It really depends on the scenario, but there are times when looking back can help in guaging your effort when you are leading. Once you've committed to a sprint finish and know you've dropped your competitor, it is probably not necessary.

Oddly, you never hear about crossfitters reproducing. They are like the Shakers of the fitness world.

Congrats to both of you for identifying the difference between 200 meters left and 3 miles left in a marathon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0A3wrEMK5YI've just heard the full quote was: "What's the problem? There's enough space".
well, Desisa had exactly two options:
1. a close second place, or
2. a distant second place
clearly, with that douchebag move
he chose option #2
Props to Desisa though, he hung tough for so long even though he looked absolutely gutted
Classic Ethiopian tactic of shadowing the leader as far as possible. Enjoyed Stephen Kiprotich zig-zagging to shake him off in Moscow almost as much as this.

Then again, I doubt those guys will ever get laid. I overheard a women saying that she'd never date a Marathon runner, and prefers REAL MEN. I think she meant "BUFF".

It seems once Desisa "glues" himself to someone's heels, he gets "drunk"(loses his mind)! I remember that duel between him and Kiprotich in Moscow. The zigzagging was really like an icing on the cake! You could notice that Desisa was completely "controlled" by Kiprotich, such that wherever Kiprotich lead, Desisa would follow. Had he decided to reverse the course, Desisa would have followed!!! And that is how simple it is to beat Desisa!
I loved the expression on Kipsang's face. I think he was irritated at the contact and when he looked over (into his strained face) he realized that Desisa had nothing at all left. Then with the utmost of calm he crushed Disisa's dreams. Disisa really did give it his all, but Kipsang had much more and knew it.
