Not the least bit absurd.

I think the question of HS records is interesting. There isn't really an 'official' record source. Here is what National Federation of State High School Associations says:
"For a performance to be considered a national record, it must be accomplished by an individual(s) representing his or her varsity high school team in competition against other competitors representing their respective varsity high school teams."
But they only list records for the 8/16/32 among distance events.
Track and Field News, on the other hand, keeps a different list, and says this:
"High School Records are those ratified by the T&FN Records Committee
We consider the season to go through August 31 of an athlete's senior year, but we have appended a section noting the best marks made in high school-only competition."
So TF&N keeps two lists: Rupp holds one record, Derrick holds the HS only record in the 5000; Webb holds one record, Ryun still holds the HS only record in the mile. Pretty awesome, what Ryun did.

What does a professional race have to do with it being to his credit vs a highschool race?
If Maton ran in a pro race he'd run faster than what he'd run in a hs race.

Did you honestly ask this? Do you place no value in a competitors competition and their effect on that competitors potential?

Maton's mother was an NCAA cross country champion and his father ran 1:46 or so for 800.
Wow, plus 4:03 as a junior.
I would say Rupp's marks are in trouble.

It was a professional race, in Europe, and post-HS graduation.
Thank you for telling me where the race was but how about actually answering my question. What does any of that have to do with giving him credit?

That doesn't make any sense. If he could have run faster then he would have or should have. Why didn't he?
Will he be a duck?

It's not not yet the end of next summer.

I'd love to see him, Fisher, and Ostberg bang heads again at Footlocker. I assume Maton will be running NXN with his team though.
In post race interviews, Maton indicated he is running Footlocker. Choosing a slightly better individual national championship over the chance to run a slightly inferior individual national championship with your team is not a decision I would make or really understand, but it's certainly his decision to make.
He looked very strong yesterday and closed very well on the track (final 300m). The weather was pretty much perfect. The course was in ok shape, a little soggy in spots from a week of heavy rain.
Wants to be a Hoosier like his mom.

You run faster when there are people in front of you to chase down. This is why many high school records are broken in pro races. If you're out in front by yourself, you won't run as fast as you would if you're racing other guys at the same level as you or faster.

His sister runs for UO. If he doesn't go to UO they'll cut her. He'll need to take one for the family.
Rupp is a well-known student of sit and kick. Sitting behind other competitors leads to faster running times.
When you're in HS your kick is still in the wee stages of development. Post-HS you work on speed, and learn to kick it in.
Rupp fans, of all people, should know this is how it works. Especially considering Rupp sits to run better times in nearly every one of his races.
Maton, Tamagno (mat sac cr holder*) and Fisher. This will be good. Hopefully they all go to FL
At what point did people no longer count Jeff Hess's time as the state record? Was there always an asterisk next to it since the course was deemed short?

Driving backwards on the freeway is safe.
Tailgating is not safe on the freeway.

Hopefully they don't.
That would mean Maton is abandoning his team, which could very well be Top 5 in the nation, and prevents all the top athletes from racing eachother (as Anderson is also likely to be at NXN).
Hopefully Fisher and Ostberg run NXN with the rest of the best so there is an actual (undisputed) national champion.
What race is more important.
NXN or Footlocker.
Why does the West have there regionals same weekend as NXN.
