My bad. Looked it up - she ran in college.

Keep trying. Also made the podium in the Olympics.

Which steeplechase world recordholder went to college in America yet never ran the event for his/her alma mater?

Correct. Kerry OBrien doesn't show up in any UTEP results. Not even cross country.

Sports-reference says he ran there... Don't know where they got this info.

Obviously someone confused the two Aussies. Most likely because both are antipodean, they ran the same events, and had the same first names. It happens: people are always getting their Kerrys, Kips, Komens, and Ronos mixed up.
Kerry Pearce, who twice set the indoor WR in the 2 mile (8:27.2 both times), did run at UTEP and was an NCAA champion in the steeplechase. Multiple references to that.
Kerry O'Brien, WR holder in the steeplechase...no mention in UTEP Track and Field guide anywhere. No mention of him in historical accounts NCAA track or NCAA Cross Country. O'Brien also set the WR in the indoor 2 mile in 1971 by defeating Pearce 8:19 to 8:20.
Parry O'Brien was a shotputter. He didn't go to UTEP, he went to USC. Both schools start with a "U".
Ashenfelter held the world best for the steeplechase.
The first IAAF world record was in 1954.
Kariuki- must have the Community college record.
