The best comedic minds endure chronic conflict between their genius and dark sides. Robin lost his battle today. Alas.
From January
"British experts have found a link with comedians
High levels of psychotic personality traits are behind the ‘sad clown’ façade of comedians like Robin Williams"

I enjoyed his performance n Good Will Hunting. He ran cross country in high school.
Good interview:
A pure heart and a very funny guy who tried so hard and was so forthright and honest and convicted in sharing the truth of his fight. What an incredible loss.
I am surprised by this thread. The majority of posts are sad or well wishing.
On the other hand, a running hero gets injured and there are a bunch of "what a wimp" and "he had it coming" type of responses. I guess I just don't understand the psyche of LR (or the psychosis).

Not Dreyfuss, you dork. Oh!, you are making a joke. Classy.
Damn.
A comic genius.
Odd how the really great comics of recent years have such a hard time balancing on the razor's edge.
He will be missed.

Sad news. He was funny but also had many good dramatic roles.
Oh Captain, my Captain..

Lame. There is a bit of a difference between death and injury.
PS. Robin Williams ran sub 2 for the half-mile.

Who said he "NEEDed" to get out?? He chose to get out. Yes, "he knew how sad his family would be and did it anyway", absolutely. Yet this makes you declare: therefore it was an necessary choice and his only choice? I declare differently: it was a selfish escape from pain.
Look, of course I understand depression is an illness, and of course I sympathize with him, but people make mistakes all the time. Suicide is often a spur of the moment decision. Many who survive never try again. If he survived, he might VERY WELL tell you himself that he didn't "need to get out", but instead made a selfish mistake, and he was given another chance.
Killing yourself hurts many people around you. But many who do choose to focus on their own pain first.

Sounds like no one close to you has killed themselves, because you clearly don't understand.
Rip
From the Mork sticker on my clock radio to his too soon death, comedic genius
Robin Williams live at the Met, freakin' great stuff. The way he could go into an audience and just goof on people was supreme.
Also a great interview when he was on Inside the Actors Studio.

Don't encourage the loser from the NW, we're hoping eventually he'll go away.
He had many great dramatic roles. Check out "The world according to Garp". He was really talented.
The human brain is a very complex organ that we still don't know enough about. Don't condemn the man for what he did. None of us know what he felt.
So often it seems the exceptional geniuses in the arts have troubled minds that make dealing with life more of a daily struggle than for most. No matter how much success they achieve.
He gave a lot to charity and never focused on dark, negative comedy like other comedians (George Carlin, Rodney Dangerfield, Greg Girraldo, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce). You knew those guys were unbalanced and depressed.
Watching a talk show interview with Williams or his stand-up was something else. His mind moved 10 times faster than any comic I've ever seen. Jonathan Winters was very similar and he had a long history of mental health problems.
Robin Williams could probably have retired from the public life 10 years ago. Stayed on medication to treat his depression. And live comfortably the rest of his life.
