yes, 100% agree. It's really rather shocking to me.
I can't imagine what LV is thinking. He routinely beat Ches at every distance in HS, usually very handily. LV should have stuck it out through at least 1 track season . Furthermore, who decided that he should abandon all his cross-training (cycling, swimming) after it had worked so incredibly for him in HS?? Sure, experiment with the emphasis being a bit more on running than his HS training, but don't completely abandon what had worked for him and made one of the absolute greatest HS runners of all time. This change in training possibly led to some subpar results during that 1 season of college X-C, which likely led to his quick exit/return to tri, which then resulted in him crashing.
(Sorry to make it about LV and not Ches, but it's hard to think of LV in this case)
