Name any other 39-year-olds in history who can pace through a 4:03 mile and then drop a 55. I love Lagat and would like to see him running at a high level forever but come on.

He's arguably the best middle distance runner ever. It should not be shocking to see him do things no one has done before. How many other 3:26 guys have taken his patient approach to training and avoiding burnout?

Name other guys who ran 3:26 in their prime and didn't retire before age 30...

Try again

I can explain.
Lagat does (per his website):
- low mileage (100% agreed on in the CrossFit community)
- incorporates FULL OUT sprints with little rest (Tabata/Crossfit style, if you will)
- heavy weights once per week
- clean diet (paleo like), however, he doesn't eat enough
In other words, if Lagat were to reduce his mileage even more, up his calorie intake and strength train a 2nd time per week, he could be one STRONG MF.
Lol, you always make me laugh with your posts. Not because they're not true, but because they always imply that everyone should just go crossfit and get strong with heavy weights and it's just hilarious to me lol no offense

El G retired at 29. Yeah, he didn't announce it until 2006 but his last race was the Athens 5000 a couple of weeks before he turned 30.

No question he may be an outlier and hopefully he's clean. I do think it is a legitimate question, however.

Clean? hahahahahaha thats funny.
I can't decide which person you morons want to live in a fantasy world more about, Nick Symmonds is cool or Lagat isn't on drugs. Who here thinks El G and Noah Ngeny was clean? IF they were doing drugs then how in the hell was Lagat as good as they were and run as fast as he did in times that haven't been run in all the years since and NOT BE ON DRUGS TOO? Understand what that sentence means. IF Lagat wasn't on drugs then he was clearly the best ever and just as good as El G and Ngeny WITHOUT being on drugs. That is idiotic. What does that 3:26 he ran convert to a 3K in?
I would have to think it would be pretty damn close to 7:20.
No one in their right mind thinks Komen's time was clean.
Who was the last person that was 39 years old setting records? Regina Jacobs. She ALSO said she had some new training she was doing that was a different approach etc. etc.
Look at Lagat as someone that had the same career he has had but was from Turkey. There is no way you would think he was clean.
Haters gonna hate.

Everyone one knows the truth (HGH, EPO, etc…) boa boa boa welcome to Track & Field.

Lagat isn't running the best times of his career. He is running fantastic times, but he is not the Bernard MF Lagat who ran 3:26 or doubled at the WC anymore.

Lagat reaped the benefits of having a 3:26 guy who regularly made record attempts to draft off, making it basically a completely rabbited race. Without El G, I doubt he'd have run that time.
Take someone like Asbel Kiprop, who I think is probably clean. He's run 3:27 in a race he had to lead, but stick him in a race with El G and he'd run 3:26. And look at the Olympic 800 in 2012. You have a bunch of guys running times that put them among the all-timers because they had a WR holder rabbiting the whole race. IMO you could actually make the argument that times set in races led by dopers should have asterisks.
he had that mystery with the false positive
the heat mixed with the urine managed to
produce EPO
or something like that..

I'm sure you can find plenty of people who never even bothered to announce their retirement.
El G was done as soon as he held up two fingers at the finish of the 5.

Correct. The 5000 was about 2 weeks short of his 30th birthday but he was essentially retired like you say. If we want to split hairs, he officially retired May 22, 2006.
