The real reason is Rupp was not going to win that race. He wasn't in pain. He looked over as he came off that turn and was told to shut it down. Salazar knew Rupp was going to lose that race.
Rupp runs 3:57 in the middle of a 5K and in his sleep. The competition wasn't at his level. Dude hasn't run 2:03 for 800m since 4th Grade. It was the damn spikes. The kid's running in a prototype that is probably destroyed by now and if he has more than 1 pair, there is probably no consistency in the lasts since they are one-offs... totally feasibly his 2nd pair of spikes hurt his feet and he was babying his originals.

Can't believe that Al let him run in shoes that weren't Rupp-certified

Ummm, Rupp hasn't had "competition" at his level in his other time trial races. Rupp has no real injury. It was all in his head.
Rupp refused to follow the rabbit: not the first time he has failed to be a leader in a race.
Rupp had his left hammie wrapped before the race, and one could still see the diagonal indentation in his leg after he quit.
Too many trans-continental flights this month.

Mr. Salazar, we know you read these boards. Please stop looking for that extra edge. It shouldn't be about who has the best shoes, the best track or the best maybe legal medication. It should be about who is the best.
So everyone in a cycle race should have the same bike?
They seem to be cut a little higher in the ankle and achilles than he was used to.

Are they really flying back and forth between there and Portland every meet? I would have thought they would find a base to train in Boston for the month.
Calm down, elfie rupp just needs to spike some more of that oregon juice.
Gotta be the shoes:
I don't really worry about him dropping oiut. I do wonder why he did not run the 3000. He should get experience die against the top guys.
in the post race interviews he said the pain was in his left leg. he never said foot. what a joke. at least make the story match up alberto

They looked like they had been made in a waffle iron.
My friends and I were at the meet and walked out through one of the side doors by the athlete cool down area about 20 minutes after the end of the meet. Parked in front of us was a black SUV with dark tinted windows, but when the door was opened and the lights came on inside you could clearly see Jordan and Al Sal sitting in the back seat. The driver came around to shepherd Rupp into the car, then closed the door and they all drove off. We couldn't stop laughing because it was just the perfect way for NOP to leave a meet. I suppose Rupp could have been doing a workout outside in between the mile and the end of the meet, but he certainly didn't run anything on the track at Reggie unless the NOP mafia SUV drove him back there later in the evening.
Kewl story, dude, but .... worthless without pics.
I'm not sure if people on here work for TMZ (trying to create something out of nothing) or are just stupid. Why not pull out of a, in the grand scheme of things, meaningless race if you start to feel a slight pain in one foot that wasn't there to begin the race? If the pain's onset occurs with 600 to go and he starts to accelerate because it's close to the end of the race, he puts himself at further risk of injuring his foot. Why have future plans derailed because he didn't listen to his body in a scenario where he was just supposed to practice racing tactics? So what if he did a workout after and felt fine? He's probably happy with his decision to pull out of the race and play it safe and if you're a fan of American distance running and want him to medal at the World indoor games, you should be happy too. Classic LetsRun conspiracy theorists at their finest.
So if you have an athlete pull out of a race/DNF...and the stated cause is injury/pain....
Why do a workout later? Regardless if it was shoe related. It just seems like an unneccesary risk...wait until the next day
I highly doubt it had anything to do with the shoes. Rupp has had a demanding past month or two and he probably just realized he didn't have the finish in him that he was wishing for. In Rupp's position, I would take a DNF over a loss any day.
