its an 8:42, with a final 57/58 400 in highschool.... really... that kind of kick in highschool on that kind of pace is amazing. I'd equate it to a 53/54 or so in a ~13 flat 5k in a diamond league race.
It's great, but it's hard to believe it's the greatest kick ever seen, which is the title of the thread.
As described here:

I agree its not the greatest final kick of a race ever, but you were treating it like chump change. If only talking about highschool it has to be alteast in the top 5, possibly greatest final 3200 kick (although I don't know of many other could be better) and in comparison to the fact that A) it a highschool race B) they were running at a very fast pace for high school it should rank very high on the list of greatest kicks.
I saw Greg Andersen close his Canadian High school 3000 record in close to 2:00, that's why I am less impressed with Sage's performance.
High school 400 fans have to consider this one!
Liquori-Ryan, 1971. I remember watching this live on CBS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOgFLcQPgYI
Here comes Mills! Here comes Mills!
Wottle too.
I love all the classics but I love the Mark Matusak kick in 2005 at Nike Outdoor Nationals. Went from 4th to 1st the last 200m. Barnicle gave him lane one for some reason. It wasn't sub 60 or a sub 8:45 race but going past everyone looked awesome.
unfortunately, asbel's 1500 win in doha '13 has been removed from youtube
in that, he ran the fastest last 100 i can ever remember in a fast 1500
he ran ~ 12.4 in a 3'31.13 !!!
( & only really pushes it last ~ 40m
he couda gone sub-12 if he'd run it hard full last 100 )
here at 35' in is last 80 - 90m of it :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIyv7aDGm9g
i'd be very grateful if anyone can find full vid ( or just last coupla 100m !!! )
Already forgot about Aouita versus Cram...

what... he puts nearly 70m between him and 2nd place in 200 meters... thats more than "holding on" besides announcer says hes they were going about 8:50 pace or so which is about 67.5 quarters, he busts a 57 or so final lap, you know only a 10 second difference...
If he'd run the entire race he'd have been more than 70m ahead without having to kick at all.
SMJO wrote:Already forgot about Aouita versus Cram...
people argue a lot about aouita's finish
asbel's 12.4 was unquestioned
i looked at the vid a lot when it was available
he took out an astonishing amount on birgen in last 40m & birgen didn't look to be fading, himself clocked 3'31.90 & ran 3'30.77pb that year in wild monaco race ( meaning more like 3'30-low for uneven pace & wide running last bend to do some overtaking ) - same pb as ovett !!!
birgen on paper can be considered just as fast as ovett was in 3'30.77wr & i woud say there is good chance you coud substitute the wr ovett for birgen in that doha race to see how good a finish that was - meaning asbel wouda probably hammered ovett in wr shape as badly as he did birgen

In your opinion...what is the greatest ending or final kick to a race you have ever seen. It can be a super close finish, or it could just be an amazing final lap. Personally, this is one of the greatest kicks I've ever seen (sorry for the bad quality)
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gXlcey3Cq6Y
If you're talking about "final", as in last 100m kick, then Seb Coe has the fastest on record in an elite 800m race (11.3 in the 81 Europa Cup semi competition in Helsinki), and the fastest last 100m on record in a major championship 1500m final, 12.1 in Moscow '80.
The latter, I'm sure you can find on Youtube: -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMz0WZzWWlwHe regularly ran the last 100m in around 12 sec flat in his peak years.
A few other examples are: -
last 100m in 1:44.06 800m in 12.3 in 81: -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5zTzMciyxwlast 100m in 12.0 in World Cup 800 in Rome 81 in a 1:46.1. He pulled 10m clear of the best in the world in the last 100m. To put into context, Wottle only managed 12.9 in a 1:45.9 in the '72 Olympic final.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Edz3KXJhu3Mlast 100m in 11.9 (last 200 in 24.1 running the bend wide!) in winning the Europa Cup final in '79 (1:47.2), relaxing in the last 20m.

Are you aware of Ben Saarel? 8:45 with a 55 last lap.
Andersen's time is far superior, as was his kick.
You missed this one--winning a 4X400 against USA, running something like a 45 second relay split. See the last 100:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhZGonCBaOM
I know that Khadevis ran a 44-point 4X4 split in college, but I doubt that any runner capable of sub-3:30 or longer equivalent has ever touched this.

Yep, thanks. I agree. It was 45.6 btw. And run 90mins after the 1:44.06 I mentioned above.
this is best kick ever in a 800 race
it was a wr
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH_LdzeLxp8
in a 1'44.84i WR, where he spent lotta race 2nd from last, long way behind guy next ahead, receiving little drafting, he is 9m back at 1600, having received virtually NO drafting, went thru in ~ 79.1
he then had to run most of next wide, going into lane 2 at start ( !!! ) dipped in & then again running wider, on lane 2 line/in lane 2, costing ~ 3.1 - 3.2m extra already
he hits 700m at ~ 1'31.6/1'31.7 as vid changes to close-up
he runs whole curve wide in lane, adding ~ 3m extra in distance for a 13.1/13.2 finish
accounting for extra distance, he ran a solo run, with NO effective drafting in 1'44.84i with ~ 6.1 - 6.2m extra distance
that is a SOLO
1'44.0i/1'44.1i
with an effective finish of
~ 24.9 / 25.0
12.7 / 12.8
& remember, this was effectively a SOLO run with NO effective drafting & on indoors likely 1.5 - 2s slower than outdoors as kip showed with 1'42.67i/1'41-flat ( zurich off suicidal48.3 !!! likely worth 1'40-mid off a 49-mid )
ereng that day coud be upgraded by 1.5 - 2s for indoors/outdoors & having no effective drafting whole race, another 0.5s
he probably was capable of, outdoors, in paced to bell ~
1'41.5 - 1'42.1
i'll take much nearer low-end as this was a championship race & he had to run a prelim, therefore, unrested
pity ereng never managed to reproduce this astonishing peak again, but he was a supernova, burning bright for just over a season...
