Or we could dispense with the idea that a spouse is property, and therefore must change his/her name to indicate the new owner.

Agree with everyone else here. A real man wouldn't give up his name.
A woman should adopt her husbands name when getting married and may (!) keep her own surname as her new middle name. Everything else is plain STUPID.

Nope and nope.
If I were your boss, i would find a way to let you go.
I am the boss (okay, well, a boss, but it's a rather large organization; let's just say "senior level").
Who only knows what my competitors would think and how they would take advantage of your weakness.
? A) How would they know, and B) Exactly how would they exploit this so-called weakness? How would you, exactly?
Does your wife protect you?
She doesn't know how to use a shotgun. No, she's very traditional, it turns out, about the "man jobs" and "a woman's role." Indeed, the name change banked major goodwill, not that that was why I did it.
Seriously. What woman would want such a weak man.
I suppose I could be envious of your youth; however, if you are a working man as you imply (or looking to marry someday, then I certainly do not envy your... limitations.
But enough from me: the name change really ain't no big thang. I look forward to your trollish response!

Why, exactly?

Why?
I kept my name, and my wife kept hers.
When we had kids we did not give them a last name.
It has all worked out fine.
Neither my wife nor I felt strongly about this issue, other than because other people are so small minded and inflexible on the idea that a woman should change her name, or that a husband should not change his, or that the kids get the dad's name.
So to screw with people, we did not fall in line. Deal with it.
Accomplished women with strong professional ties, legacy credentials and established careers would commit self-sabotage by assuming their husband's last name. But, I don't expect any of you basement dwellers to understand this concept.

You said it. I don't even know why I bother.
My friends husband hyphenated his name so they both along with their 8 kids have the same name.
My child has two last names (not hyphenated).
My wife is from China.
She kept her last name (as is the custom in China).
Our baby has my English surname. He has my wife's Chinese surname.
How can your children not have a last name. What is on their birth certificate?
No. You don't take your wife's last name.
Unless you hate your name.
A wife taking her husband's last name is good for unity of the whole family and kids.
Children with hyphenated names just leads to predictable impossible problems down the line.
The Hispanic community tacks on a bunch of names and it becomes difficult for social security.
Having no last name causes issues as well.
A woman usually wants to have the same last name as her children and will change her name for that reason.
Giving the children a middle name of the mother's last name works fine, except that middle names seem strange when they are typical surnames.
From a professional point of view, many women use their maiden names professionally but legally change their last names for taxes, passports and such.
Jennifer Garner is legally Jennifer Affleck and Jessica Biel is legally Jessica Timberlake for example.
Joan Rivers is legally Joan Rosenberg, keeping her ex-husband's name. And her daughter, Melissa Rosenberg started using the stage name of Melissa Rivers to stay linked to her mother.

I am not in the US, so we don't have to have a last name.
That said, I was not being entirely correct. We gave the first kid my wife's last name, and the second kid my last name.
We did this because we knew in the future it would probably cause problems getting a driver's licence, credit card, etc. without a last name.
However, for purposes of school, lessons, extra curriculars, etc. we intentionally do not include their last name - again just because we like to make people question to practice. Kind of lame at times I know, but I think it is a worthwhile exercise - esp bc both kids are girls.

Hey, lemme try!
WHY?!
Why is it good for unity for the wife to take hubby' name but not the other way around?

Because a real man wouldn't take his wife's name, that's why.
I do know a guy that changed his name and his wife's name to a new name that was derived form their original last names.

Ah. Logic. My bad.
What school was that again? I'd like to avoid it...

This. I know a woman who uses her ex-husband's name for business use because it is easier to remember than her legal hyphenated name or her current husband's name.
This: Why no Flagpole's rules for a real man on this?

Perhaps you should think a little before you type.
Here is a concept for you...
99% of the most successful married women in the world have their husband's last name, the other 1 percent use a hyphenation, zero percent kelp their own last name and zero percent of the husbands took their wife's last name.
There are a lot of things we do out of tradition and accepting you husband's last name in modern time does not in no way imply ownership. Btw, this is not trackcoach, I am his wife; I am strong; credentialed; I have an established career and I accepted my husband's last name with pride.

What happens when he/she gets married?
Johnny Smith-Jones marries Sally White-Brown...WTH is the kid going to be named?
Everyone pick ONE name. Nobody cares which one.

This is a hilariously inane post. Kudos on creating an excellent parody of the stupidity that is seen here all the time. Well done sir (or madam).
