They should have a ski/run duathlon. You ski DOWN the slaloms and then run back UP through the slaloms. That would be awesome. Fastest time wins!!

NOT ATHLETICS: Gravity sports, Nintendo, Ice sports, Wii, Low Resistance sports, Snow sports, X-Box, Chess
can you imagine how anti-climatic it would be to cross the line first in the Olympic indoor 60m?

it's bad enough that we even have world's for indoor track

Except for sprint courses, XC ski courses are much more difficult than any running course. They pack in a lot of vertical, and running on the snow would be very difficult.
Cross country would be intruiging. But so would snowshoe running. A sprint (500 m), a mid distance (2 KM), and a distance race 12KM (making it all different from standard race distances) - and yes put these on XC ski courses
I agree. Showshoe running, if it were not such a niche sport, would be great in the Winter Olympics. It would be interesting to see if the top marathoners and 10k runners could cross over successfully.

Gravity sports and snowsports are not athletics? Hmm...sounds like running hubris? Are you just jealous these ATHLETES just maybe are in better shape than you? How sad.

Cross-country would be more ideal. As a bonus, running over snow and ice might allow some non-Africans to medal. Even if they swept, it would allow Africans a chance at winter medals that they are usually denied for obvious reasons.

It's just Troll Randy, ignore him.
Snowshoe running would be interesting. Is this a highly technical sport? Or is it a matter or any decent runner with a little training to get used to the shoes can do it pretty well?
Surely it's too early for world class T&F athletes to peak indoors and too late for XC.
Huh?
Pretty simple, all Winter Olympic events have either snow or ice involved.
The debate should be about is it necessary for the winter sports to be played on snow or ice? Or should indoor events be included? Where the Summer is limiting sports, the Winter will add anything that fits the narrow definition of winter sports. Maybe T&F could add the snow man throw or snow jump.
No doubt- the Winter Olympics aren't as popular as they used to be.
Three reasons:
1. Too many events have been added, watering it down. Go back to the 1970's/80's events.
2. It lasts too long (see 1. above).
3. They should move it back to the "real" Olympic Year. it used to be an Olympic Year, Winter and Summer. It was more exiting- the whole year (Winter to Sept) was gearing up for the Olymnpics.
I used to love the Winter Games, now, I hardly watch them.

My guess is that the winter Olympics are making more money now than they ever have. I don't know that for a fact, but I would bet that you are looking back on Winter Olympics of your youth and changes have a lot more to do with you then w/ the winter Olympics.
One thing for sure is that I was captivated by the easy story lines of Olympics in the 70s/80s (we may be the same age) of good Western Countries w/ pure amateur athletes vs. Evil Communist Countries w/ corrupt professionals. Of course that was simply manipulative bollocks but I didn't know that at the time.
Why isn't bowling in the Winter Olympics?

You're right and wrong.
I agree that the communist allure made the Olympics more exiting.
But, I'm talking about teenagers mocking the winter Olympics about sleigh riding forward and backward and with one man, two men, four men, etc etc.
Then, coming back to school in fall and talking about how cool the Summer Olympics were.
There are too many sports in the Summer, too but they're easier to ignore because of the marque events and the choices we have because of the internet and cable TV.
2012, I watched the BBC Track Coverage on my TV via my computer.

I don't have that much interaction w/ teenagers (except my own) but my understanding is that many of the newer events were added to appeal to the X-games crowd. I like some of the new events (Short track speed skating) and not others (aerial skiing, eh). Things change. If I don't like something I don't watch it.
The problem with sports was that there used to be the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Now everyone's a winner.
That an focusing on just one or two athletes. I don't care what they had for breakfast, get back to the competition!
That said too bad xc doesn't run over these xc skiing courses in the xc season. Instead we put on races around athletic fields and inside horse races.[/quote]
That would be pretty good but horses would need a big handicap

I know the aerial ski jump was around a LONG time before the X-Games.
