Forgive me, but I really think a geography lesson would serve you well. Begin by examining where Corvallis and Portland, Oregon are on a map.

So what about all of the money she passed up last year?
She turned down money for placing at USATF.
She turned down potential sponsorship money over the summer.
She could have had some appearance money.
What did she gain by passing up that money since she is now pro?
Passing up the money gained her time to go over the pros and cons and make an informed decision. Besides, it's not like she needed the money.
Try to write as simply and as directly as possible. If you don't understand proper grammar, just keep it simple.

I understand the process.
And I really understand they didn't go into this thinking she could make money as a high school junior, so it's not like they missed something they were expecting.
But in retrospect, they absolutely threw away money with nothing to show for it.
If they don't need the money, why take it now?
Why take it ever?
You can always use the money.

They didn't throw anything away. She can still get the prize money and she'll get money for 2013 (as she's signing now and not in 2014).
I am wondering when tx_RUNNER_girl will go pro. Do you think she will sign with Nike, Converse or Sketchers?
As Jeff Wigand said, she can collect on 2013 winnings still, like Centro did.
To clarify, she can get her earnings from USATF 2013 second place?
Centro was able to collect his 2011 winnings where he wore his Oregon singlet after he declared pro in early 2012?
I didn't know this.
And it's good if they can do that.
I suppose the money is held in a trust for a time period, but for how long?
I guess if they run one race representing their school after that event, then the money would go back to USATF.
I am not clear on these rules so please explain.
I do know the money was not accepted a the time of performance.
A savy agent and any lawyer can figure ways to get back some of the cash "lost" in 2013. Me thinks it's not so lost at all and there are many who know where it is.

Me too. Shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on at NOP.

They don't pay anybody at the time. No one gets paid until all the drug testing is completed.

Going forward, this is a good thing.
She's already at a level above the NCAA and still has a year of high school left.
She may peak early. Get it while you can.
Her prime season is during the summer and the NCAA schedule isn't conducive to that over a number of years.
Cain would have been a fish out of water, intellectually and socially, at an Ivy. The cocoon in Portland is better.
Best choice for her. I'm guessing that she will attend Portland for classes? Any insider knowledge on that?
Not really thrilled about her timing of the announcement. She is stealing the headlines announcing she is foregoing college on the same day the NCAA Championships field is being set.

I'm a little bit surprised as I thought she would run for Oregon, but I think she's making the right decision. Collegiate running would have been a waste of time for her even with Salazar still coaching her like Galen Rupp. For the person who wonders where she will go to college, I would imagine it would be Oregon State, since it's in the same town as Nike headquarters.
Trolling? Or do you think Oregon State (the Beavers) is in Beaverton?
tough s***. PRO > COLLEGE

I understand your point, but this ain't exactly Cano signing with the Mets during the 7th game of the World Series. Where other than Let's Run do you think both these stores are going to be reported on the same day? 90% of the papers/new sites in teh US won't cover teh Cain story, 80% of the media won't have regional xc results.
She went pro after the HS marathon phenom announced her own professional aspirations. Is Cain late to the party?
