I have a different 3 suggestions.
1 - Buy a Lonely Planet guide (to anywhere)
2 - Pack a comfortable backpack
3 - Buy a one-way ticket to anywhere, and just get on the plane.

Why? Someday (probably) you'll get married, have kids, buy a house, settle down, go to work, pay down a 30-year mortgage, rinse and repeat. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity...6-month sabbatical with a guaranteed job and income on the backend. You have the rest of your life to work, earn money and learn new skills....don't "waste" the next 6 months on something that will probably be outdated in 5 years anyways.
Develop yourself. Go see the world, learn about different cultures, meet interesting people, learn a new language.
Go trekking in the Nepal Himalaya, Swiss Alps, Chilean Andes - Torres del Paine, Peruvian Andes - Huascaran & Huayhuash....you'll be amazed at your running strength and speed after hiking 10-20 miles a day thru the mountains at 4,000m to 5,000m+ with a 25lb pack on your back.
You can take Coursera or Udacity courses at night on your laptop while you have a $1 one-liter beer in Argentina or Laos. You can do any part-time web-design work from your laptop while laying on the beach in Thailand or Zanzibar or Bali or Brazil or Easter Island or New Zealand.
Stay in hostels and meets 100s or 1,000s of backpackers from around the world.
And have the absolute f'n time of your life!!
Best of luck! Happy travels if you decide to do this.
P.S. If you're only reason is you don't have the money, borrow from anybody and everybody: parents, grandparents, whoever..and pay it back when you start working. You can travel the world for 6 months on $10,000 and live like a king....some places 10 bucks a day is enough for everything.
