Our country is going down the crapper and this is what they are spending time on?
.
How does this issue shopw that we are going down the "crapper"?
The meaning of words change over time...this is routine. That name for a team is ....so outdated. It ought to go!
The native peoples have zero power in our nation.
The members of that other Tribe that comprises many if not most of the owners in the NFL, on the other hand, have oodles of power and for the most part are a bunch of racist prix.
Do not expect any name change.

WHat if there were a college team called the "Fighting Irish" that portrayed the Irish as belligerent, leprechaun-like midgets? Oh, wait there is.
Raise your hands if offended, white people.
{Uhh, don't see any hands}
People need to get over themselves.
You've never seen how offended they were when they lost another football game?
I hardly see Obama's response as "pressure". What did he say? Something like "if I were the owner I would think about it". Well, I'll bet the actual owner has thought about it, probably thought about it a lot...hell he's probably hired consulting and PR firms to help think even more about it.
Some things are just right. Indians, Fighting Irish, Chippawas are on thing. Redskins is another.
No different than naming a team mascot Zipperheads, Slopes, Slanteyes, Dune Coons, Krauts, or Gooks.

No, I agree with you, that would not be okay. But I just want to know where we draw the line with what offends people? There are so many different groups of people out there that you could make a case that any name would offend some group. I personally don't get offended very easily, but there are certainly words that are hurtful to white people.
Of course, we can have a societal conversation about "where do we draw the line?", but I think basically everyone agrees that the line is located somewhere past racial slurs.
Washington Gentrifiers
Washington Hogs, lot of team history already in the nickname. Even have mascots already established.
The bigger question is: why are they still called the Washington anythings? Their headquarters is at Redskin Park in Ashburn, VA, and they play at Fedex Field in Landover, MD. They need a name overhaul on multiple levels.
They should definitely change their name. "Washington" gives the Redskins a bad name.
Its more the media than Native Americans pushing this issue. The 'protest' in Green Bay when the Redskins played there drew 15ish people. Multiple schools with native american majority students have voted to change their mascot TO Redskins.
Is Oklahoma changing its name too? 'Oklahoma' comes from the Choctaw words meaning 'red people'. If Redskins is offensive isn't red people?

Of course those Indians don't wanted to be associated with a pathetic losing team like the Redskins. If they were winning the superbowl, they would want to be part of the parade celebrating the victory.
You never hear any Vikings complaining do you?
That makes no sense, logically speaking. Now, if the Vikings were winning, your analogy would work. They are not, so it does not.
However, I am offended by the Pirates until this year, when they finally made the playoffs again. Go Pirates!
"People" is not as offensive as "Skins"
Yes, they will change their name. It may take five years, but they will change it.

Tell that to the Seminole Tribe of the Florida- they own the Hard Rock Hotel/Casino empire worldwide. As an Eagles fan, I hate the Redskins almost as much as the Cowboys. But the Redskins name is fine with me.

marionberry wrote:This whole issue is ridiculous to me, this country just won't stop until we find a way to not offend a single person with anything. If they change to the "Nationals" as was proposed won't we offend the internationals on the team or in the community. People need to get a little bit thicker skin and realize they aren't going to agree with everything that happens in life. Sad thing is that it's probably just going to get worse with the "everyone gets a participation medal" generation that is getting older and starting to move into roles with authority.
If there was a team called the Oakland N words would that be ok? It's not about thicker skin, it's about a word that is very hurtful to a group of people. There is no word that is hurtful to white people so you don't understand.
This ^ is correct.
Folks are so used to the name that they think it must be fine because, well...because it has always been that way and what's the big fat deal?
The comparison to the Oakland N!ggers is an apt one. For those of you who don't get it just think about whether or not that name would also be A-OK.
Washington Freemasons
thousands and thousands of Indians in Oklahoma claim to be REDSKINS because brownskins refer to Mexican people and Indians hate it when you mistake them for being Mexican. I remember back when there was no such thing as a native American. native American was any person born in the united states. tribal members are called Indians. it was the politically correct pusses that wanted to force white people to call them native instead of indian. this crap is no different. notice how blacks can call themselves the Niggaz, but whites cant? I am a tribal member and who are these ppl in new York that are trying to tell me what I can or cant call myself? they are no different than white people to me and I will always call myself redskin/indian and theres not a dam thing they can do about it.
redskin and savage are 2 completely different things. if these wimps have a problem with redskin, how would they like it if we renamed them the savages?? savage is a derogatory term, but redskin is a term of respect and honor.
THIS IS DAN SNYDERS TEAM. THIS IS AMERICAS TEAM. OUTSIDERS CANNOT FORCE US TO CHANGE THE NAME JUST BECAUSE A FEW PEOPLE DONT LIKE IT. DAN SNYDER HAS REDSKIN PRIDE, MUCH MORE THAN ANY OF THESE PANSY COMPLAINING ONEIDAS. EVEN THOUGH SNYDER IS WHITE, TO ME HE IS MUCH MORE INDIAN THAN THE ONEIDAS WILL EVER BE BECAUSE ATLEAST HE HAS PRIDE.
the only reason they hate the word "redskin" is because they have no pride. they are ashamed of who they are. they hate everything about the image of the redskin/indian. id love to see the Oneida tribe come to Oklahoma and pull some of their politically correct bullshyt. everyone here is proud to be a redskin and we support the redskins. our state means "red people" in Choctaw language. bright colorful outfits and living a wild and proud lifestyle is what being indian is all about, not sitting around bitching and being quick to get offended. when there really are no Indians left, it wont be the proud people that supported redskins that caused their demise. it will be dumbazzes like the Oneidas that sat around trying to sugarcoat the image of the indian and remove our freespeech. stop bittching about the Washington redskins and get goddam life and stop being ashamed of who you are you stupid politically correct fux. OKLAHOMA REDSKIN TILL I DIE
