Let's hope the paydays come to a grinding screeching halt for him soon because he hasn't earned his pay in a very long time.
He 100% earned his appearance money for New York. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH PERFORMANCE. Putting his name on the list as running NY has helped in generating interest in the race. He had every major running publication talking about it. He will also have every major running publication talking about it when he pulls out of the race. The message boards will blow up. YOU ARE INTERESTED IN RYAN HALL. If you are upset, disappointed, happy, or just want to say I told you so, then you are interested.
The silly part is that we all keep getting sucked in. He let us down in the Olympics but we came back for more. He pulled it again in NY by pulling out before the race was cancelled. Then again in Boston. Why do we still keep getting sucked in?
The Halls have the luxury of cherry picking when they feel like running with the ASICS America sponsors they have. The Japanese adore Sara and admire Ryan. Their unique image cannot be duplicated by any other couple. Californians. Stanford brains. Sara is a rare beauty without makeup. A doll that ASICS uses to sell, sell, and sell, and then sell some more. Oddly enough though, the two of them are BAC's and the population of Japan has fewer than 1% non-Buddhists/Shintos.

The lotto was going to be overflowing regardless.
And the press will be talking about NYCM regardless of who signs up to toe the line:
>NYCM on the first anniversary post Sandy.
>NYCM security measures post Boston
>Pamela Anderson preparing to target a 15 minute pace.
That said, I agree with you that under the "any publicity is good publicity" philosophy, Hall for the win here.
I guess I'm just waiting to see how long Asics will agree.
Most companies expect their athletes to eventually show up and finish a race at some point. There are lots who do... pick one and toss 10% of Hall's contract that way.

How do you guys feel about this?

You may notice that a lot of Ryan's sentences don't make any sense.
Ryan Hall's Final Blog From Kenya: "I definitely got what I came for in my first trip to Kenya"
I wonder if that means EPO and he does not want to race yet as he is in the middle of his first cycle.
I think this may ge closer to the truth.
I don't think he is an attention seeker though. He may just not want to put the work in right now ( or ever ). He's slowing and the expectations are rather high. Gets tough.

Hall will DNF at NY. Sad to say, but I think his career his over.
His career has been over for a while. He just hasn't admitted it yet.
All of his sentences made sense and were grammatically correct. Boring video. I want a pancake.
Time for Hall to find a church or something to lead. He had his best go at it when he ran that Boston race, unfortunately he didnt win.
THE DUDE'S A TOTAL CLOWN. THIS WITHDRAWAL WAS SO PREDICTABLE. AS IS HIS FUTURE WITHDRAWAL OR (MOST LIKELY) DNF AT NEW YORK AND WITHDRAWAL/DNF FOR MANY OTHER RACES.

Maybe he would have much better results if he started worshiping the devil.

You obviously know nothing about Japanese people. From the way you describe them, they would be a freak show novelty. You make it sound as if Japanese people are in love with blondies and blue eyed Americans circa 1965....it's not like that anymore and hasn't been for a long, long time. Especially in the marathon....DNFers are not respected. They have their own heros. Not to mention that most Japanese, unlike Americans, are able to get by without giving a sh*t what your religion is. You're Christian? Fine. You're Buddhist? Fine. You're a Satan worshipper? Fine. Let's go run...

I do think Hall would be well served to race more often (even when he's not in peak shape), but please don't compare elite runners to local hobby runners. The two have nothing in common.
Everything he has said since leaving the Mammoth group indicates he just doesn't want to put in the work. The worst thing you can do when you get in the injury rut is to just run mileage at a moderate pace and that's what it sounds like he is doing based on yesterday's Runner's World interview. Taking a day off every week, not wanting to run anything faster than marathon pace, not wanting to do the extra strength work that others are doing makes it seem like he just doesn't want to do the work that he once was doing. He may still run well at some point but he is going to have to rededicate himself to his craft if that is going to happen.
