I think I made my thread title too hastily and I think, ddj, that we agree here: Bekele is the better runner and yes, the championship records make it. What I'm trying to advance is the narrower claim that Kipchoge has perhaps the third greatest RANGE of any distance runner as of yet. Yes obviously Bekele was a more dominant athlete at his peak; Bekele's 6 consecutive 10k titles are nonpareil. But Kipchoge now has the fourth fastest 5k and fourth fastest marathon of all time (and a 7:27/8:07 3k/2 mile combo to boot). Bekele showed more ability across surfaces while Kipchoge is next only to Geb and Tergat when it comes to range.
I'll stick to that for the time being, at least until Bekele and Mo become serious marathoners.
The whole discussion about whether Mo "should" be able to run X or Y seriously bores me.
