Remember, there's a certain fellow named Steve Scott who ended up at UC Irvine because UCLA decided he wasn't good enough. There are plenty of such coaching gaffes in judging talent.

Is it possible these other groups she approached already had 800/1500 runners and could not take her on? Hard to believe someone would say, "You're not good enough, you're not a championship runner."
Sounds like she's doing a screw you right now. Not attractive.
The words 'Brenda Martinez' and 'not attractive' do no belong in the same sentence.

So, I see that you have cleverly managed to pass this test on a technicality.

I don't agree. The interviewers asked the question. She answered. That simple.

This is exactly right.
"You're not a championship runner" would be an incredibly ironic statement coming from Schumacher's group.
I would guess what someone else said though, Bay Area and Mammoth.
You're*

yep, i remember reading an article that then UCLA coach jim bush told steve scott he wouldn't let him on the team, because he wouldnt be able to keep up with UCLA's runners and bush did not want his runners to slow down for steve scott.
another one of my favorite stories michael jordan did not make his high school basketball team in 10th grade because the coach picked the team solely on who were the 12 tallest kids in the school and there were 12 kids taller than michael jordan.
also larry bird went to indiana university as a freshman and bobby knight told bird to transfer because he would never be good enough to play at indiana, so bird transferred to indiana state.
funny stories.

i also don't agree. She handled that interview with class. She didn't name names - and could have. Who is the idiot that turned her down. It was pretty obvious to me 2 years ago that she had massive talent. She was vary aggressive, had great running form and speed. She just need someone like Vigil to get her into a consistent training and racing routine. Some of these club coaches have no idea how to develop and simply want athletes who have already shown themselves to be top notch. I would have said a lot more than she did after winning a bronze in Worlds. Well done Brenda. I have a lot of respect.
Yeah, Brenda has more medals from these World Championships then the entire Schumacher crew.

Kudos to the USA Track & Field Foundation for giving two grants to Brenda and recognizing her talent back in early 2010.
I have a vague memory that Erin Donohue left John Cook after he told her that she wasn't good enough to run 4:00, which led to his defensively remarking that when he took her on
she was "waddling around the Nike campus 10 pounds overweight."
Brenda Martinez = GUTS
Well done Brenda, well done! We're very proud of you!

Pretty sure the two coaches that turned her down were Terrence Mahon and Julie Benson.
I know for a fact that BATC would have never turned down Brenda.

You forgot to say, 'your welcome'.
Your welcome.
Going from 1:59.XX TO 1:57.XX is the big difference between medal and no medal in the 800. But who can predict this? Odds are Wilson, Judd and Cain will stagnate right where they are, never get a medal. Think about Vessey, Pierce. Coaches are just a little better at figuring this out, but it's still a crap shoot for them too. Before this year Brenda was best known as a decent, not great, 1500m runner. She probably wouldn't have a medal if she had stuck with the 1500. It took a lot of insight and guts for her to focus on the 800. She wouldn't have medalled in the 798, either. But Martinez deserves all the credit and all the "Told you so's" she cares to issue. But I can't really blame the track clubs for not being clairvoyant.

That is not true. Bird left Indiana on his own because he didn't fit in with university life. He didn't transfer right to Indiana State, he just went back home. It had nothing to do with basketball, nor anything Knight said about Bird's ability. Knight did regret doing nothing to help Bird with the transition.

You know I don't even wanna hear about her being hurt over being dissed by a team, I let her know back then she was good enough for the team I personally was financing via email. Not a single reply, just to say no thanks...nothing. I mean sure, my team only consisted of me, a black light, air mattress, shower curtain and sum baby oil but have some professionalism Brenda!
that is gold
She came on my radar in 2010, she hadn't run any great times at that point, but she looked good, like someone who had potential. If 2010 is the year she got rejected, I don't blame any of the groups for turning her down becasue they are geared towards producing true elites meaning at the very least you are a mutilpe times NCAA all-Amercian and/or made USATF finals at age 22 or younger. It is unfortunate that she got dissed, but the elite groups would be a mob if they picked up every athlete at the level Brenda was in 2010. The elite groups Brenda probably approached are not true fram teams, they are the major ledgue -or at the very least triple A.

Thank you for correcting Douglas Burke's careless and uninformed statement. Why don't people ever research the facts before making such idiotic declarations?!
