I was probably too harsh with the coat tail comment. Rupp had excellent positioning at the bell and a phenomenal last lap in London. The difference is that Mo has sustained his performance, whereas Rupp has spent much of the year getting dropped after the bell.
What critique will Galen have of himself, his coach, and their training plan? Has the novelty and added benefit of training with and racing beside Mo Farah, the world's best, worn off?
I don't think they've been on the same training plan as much this year. Perhaps Galen overdid the physical intesity this year. Maybe that will pay off later. Maybe he's forcing it mentally. Maybe he just wants it too bad now and needs to relax just a bit. Mo is pretty calm most of the time and doesn't get too tight in races.
There have been seasons like this in the past for Rupp and he figured it out and launched onward. He's a bit like stock in a strong bull market. Trajects up, then corrects a little, maybe a little backing and filling and then up and away again, repeat, repeat.
Didn't he have a relatively ho-hum summer one year prior to going 26:48?
