It took Michael Jordan 7 seasons to win his first championship. Give her some time. (and yes I realize he's probably just trolling, I'm equally bored)

Mary Cain used a terrible tactic in the final, the same as in the semi, but I seriously doubt it was her idea to do that and it was probably Salazar's. The result was that she wasted all her energy in the first couple of laps, and ended up in the back anyway, but having used up all of her energy.
The best race she ran in Moscow was the prelim, where she followed all the way, stayed out of trouble and conserved her energy, then kicked in at the finish.

She finished 10th. She was fifth in her semis.
Extrapolation.
+1
Someone gets it...
Is it really funny to start dumb threads that everyone will pile on and disagree with? I dont get it. And heres the obligatory if you actually thought Cain ran poorly youre dumb routine.
I think this post has got it wrong. It should be "Simpson, WTF?" Harking back to last year Jenny was training hard and running badly - not close to qualifying for the Olympic final, regressing in her career. This year she's gone back to her college coach and turned it all around. We know she has ok but not great 800 meter speed (Cain is faster), but she's still a good finisher. So she's crafted a race trajectory that fits her abilities, and trains for that trajectory. Control the race from the start, but don't dawdle, save enough to finish well. Every race since this spring in Des Moines has shown a disciplined, dominant racing style. And think about what happened in Monaco DL - she led the Americans to 4 of the top 5 places in the 1500. Perhaps there's something to emulate here for some of our runners, something other than "sit and kick" (not saying that tactic isn't appropriate for some runners like, perhaps, Morgan Uceny). As for Cain, she's got to find, and train for, a trajectory that doesn't lose contact with the leaders at the 1K mark. Mary said as much in her post race interview. But as Simpson has shown, the optimal training and racing style can be elusive.
this is the reason Sarah Baxter will beat her again in XC if Cain runs.

Getting History Right wrote:Typical letsrun idiot; you expect a girl who is barely 17 to have the base and strength to run 3 races in so few days?
That was her 3rd fast time ever, assuming NBC was right.
A GREAT year for her.
THIS. Especially your first 3 words - very accurate..
Simpson PR's Cain PR's
800 2:00.45 1:59.51
1500 3:59.90 4:04.62
Mile 4:25.91i 4:28.25i
3000 8:42.03i 9:04.51i
5000 15:01.70 15:45.46
I just find it funny that all the lets run nerds are piling on to defend little Mary Cain when if this was Jordan Hasay getting 10th in a final after being 5th in the prelim of that race she'd be ripped apart. Does Cain have a halo over her head or something?
Is this a serious post.....WTF

This is LetsRun. If people disagree with you, you're an idiot.
Not in this case.
In this case it is because you don't "what the fvck" about a girl who just turned 17 and made the freaking WC final...
To a 17 year old who's just done that, you say "good job."
If the low point of your year, when all the NOP haters and "she left the girls team" haters come out, is a 4:06 for 10th in the world, you know you're doing something right! Great year, Mary; you have an exciting future ahead of you.
WTF? 4:08,4:05 and 4:07 in 6 days fo a girl going into her senior yr in HS! Your post is so idiotic that no one is talking about Simpsons great run.

Way to put her down for what she's already accomplished.

Way to chop her down by saying that last place was "good job."
Cain has peaked. How many young phenoms actually run well into adulthood? She's cooked.

Why are people attacking me? The "Michael Jordan of U.S. women's distance running" did not perform in the clutch.
michael jordan wasn't THE michael jordan after his first professional year either.
It should be "Dibaba WTF"? She's got a 3:57 PB and ends up 8th place in 4:05+ AND, her name is Dibaba!?
Cain did fantastic all things considered. Until she builds some multi-race-day stamina into her 17 yr old legs, she would do better in a golden league meet where running heats is not required.
This ^
The OP does not get it!
Mary Cain was fantastic this year ! Ranks right up there with Jim Ryan and Jerry the jogger as one of these best high school distance runners ever.
he has the same speed, but she does not have the same endurance. Simply not enough miles in her legs yet to make it though the rounds and perform well in the finals. Give her a few years of higher mileage.[/quote]

Like asking a real good high 17 year old high school pitcher to pitch against the Boston Red Sox. Not smart.
