Really? The majority of people I know with tattoos have one that has no personal relevance, things like a random star, butterfly, etc. One of my friends has a poor replica of a picasso painting on his forearm. He got it within a week of seeing that particular painting in a museum. It didn't have any particular meaning to him, he just thought it looked cool. Of course, this guy also has his ex-wife's name tattooed on his butt cheek. Those are the only two tattoos he has. At least the first one (name on butt cheek) had personal significance and wasn't just to look cool (At least I hope not, given the choice he made of subject and location!)I think ataglance might have his tattoos for reasons of personal significance and just assumes everybody else he sees with tattoos has a meaningful reason for that. I suspect that he hasn't bothered to ask them. In most cases I have found people got their tattoo either because it looked cool and for no other reason, or it was something slightly important in their life (ie the middle of the road collegiate runner who gets the winged foot and then proceeds to never run competitively after college) that they used as an excuse to get a tattoo. It is quite rare that anybody tells me it was to remember their relative or friend who passed away, or for their children, or because they love running so much they have been competing for the last 25 years and never want to stop unless forced to, in which case they will coach.
