I don't think any US male has ever won a semi at 800 or longer in Youth and probably not in Junior, either. Probably same case for girls, except in 800 I think Ajee Wilson may have won prelims at both levels since she was the champ in 2011 WY and 2012 WJ.Some more of the top World Youth distance performances over the years:2003 3k - Galen Rupp 7th in 8:10.42.2007 1500 - Jordan Hasay 2nd2009 1500 - Chelsea Sveinsson 4th2011 1500 - Cami Chapus 5th, Hannah Meier 9thAll ran 4:20 or better.

It's my understanding that the World Youth Championships is not the same as the World Jr Championships. This is an age thing, yes? World Youth may be for 17 or 18 y.o. or younger, while World Jrs. is 19 and under.
Either way, I believe World Jrs is historically more competitive and prestigious, but I may have this wrong.
Yes, the 'Davis '96 semi to final' disparity in performance, that is an outlier. It's significant to be capable of physically guaranteeing an auto qualification to the finals by winning. It does bode well that they're capable of competing in the front half of the final if their young bodies can recover and they manage the race well.
So the real question should be, has an American ever won a World Youth OR World Jr Semi? And if yes, which events?
